This trend reflects a broader shift in how younger generations view gold, not just as a symbol of tradition, but as a strategic financial tool. The Patil family in Mumbai exemplifies this change. After years of storing heirloom gold items, such as heavy bangles and a bridal necklace, in their bank locker, the couple opted to sell the collection to help purchase their first home in Navi Mumbai. The sale yielded nearly Rs 20 lakh, significantly reducing their monthly home loan payments and freeing up additional disposable income. The couple now uses part of the savings for weekend getaways to Lonavala, illustrating how the proceeds from gold sales are being reinvested into lifestyle improvements and future aspirations. This pattern is echoed across multiple regions. In Bengaluru, a 25-year-old banker sold her inherited jewelry following a surge in domestic gold prices, using the proceeds to diversify her investments in an equity portfolio. Similarly, a 31-year-old doctor in Delhi argues that outdated, heavy jewelry should not remain locked away in a locker when it could instead serve as a more efficient investment. She prefers converting such items into gold bars or coins, which offer greater liquidity and easier management compared to traditional jewelry. In some cases, entire families are making collective decisions about their gold holdings. A Bengaluru-based family consisting of a 24-year-old, along with his parents and grandparents, recently sold part of their idle gold jewelry, raising nearly Rs 80 lakh. The funds were allocated toward the young man's master’s degree abroad and served as seed capital for his father’s new food processing business. These examples highlight how gold is becoming a flexible resource, supporting both personal and professional ambitions. The surge in gold prices has played a crucial role in driving this trend. Domestic gold prices reached an all-time high of Rs 160,000 per 10 grams earlier this year, though they have since moderated. Over the past two fiscal years, gold prices have risen sharply, increasing by 33% in FY2025 and 60% in FY2026. This upward trajectory has made gold more attractive as an investment, prompting consumers to reconsider its traditional role as mere ornamentation. Market analysts note a notable shift in purchasing behavior. According to ICRA’s analysis, based on data from the Gold Council of India, there was a 21% decline in gold jewelry demand by volume in FY2026, while demand for gold bars and coins increased by approximately 22%. This divergence underscores a growing preference for gold as an investment vehicle rather than solely as decorative items. Gold recycling companies, such as Muthoot Exim, have observed this change firsthand, with customers increasingly opting to sell older jewelry for cash rather than holding onto it indefinitely. Rajiv Popley, director of the Popley Group, reports that old jewelry has become a key component of his business, with stores functioning almost as scrap-buying centers. These establishments evaluate the purity of old ornaments and facilitate the recycling process, helping customers convert their idle gold into usable funds. Popley estimates that over 1 lakh tonnes of gold are currently lying unused in Indian lockers, with only a small fraction having been recycled so far. As the trend continues, it appears that more Indians will follow suit, recognizing the potential of their gold holdings beyond their aesthetic or sentimental value. Whether through direct sales, conversion to bullion, or strategic reinvestment, the evolving perception of gold is reshaping how families manage their wealth and plan for the future.
