According to Luis Gómez Negrete, head of the Commission for the Search of Missing Persons in Mexico City, these areas account for a significant portion of the city’s outstanding cases. The Sierra de Guadalupe leads the list with over 200 pending searches, followed by the rocky slopes of Álvaro Obregón and the forested regions of Ajusco, which span multiple boroughs including Tlalpan and Magdalena Contreras. The search in Tláhuac-Chalco is also notable, linked to its proximity to Lake Chalco and its historical role in disappearances. The search strategy varies depending on the nature of each case. In rural and semi-natural areas, investigators rely on foot patrols, drones, and satellite imagery, often working in collaboration with local communities and volunteers. Gómez explained that these areas are typically considered after urban searches fail to yield results. This is because individuals who go missing in such environments are often hikers, workers, or people who became lost during outdoor activities. Additionally, some cases involve long-standing disappearances, leading authorities to consider these locations as potential hiding spots after exhausting other options. In contrast, urban searches involve more structured methods, including door-to-door visits, surveillance using cameras, and interviews with witnesses. These efforts are concentrated in neighborhoods where missing persons are more likely to be found, such as residential areas, shelters, hospitals, and hostels. Gómez noted that while urban searches generate more activity due to higher population density, rural areas remain critical for resolving older or more complex cases. The search efforts have drawn participation from both government agencies and private citizens. Volunteers, including families of the missing and community members, play a key role in organizing and supporting these operations. Yoltzi Martínez, a volunteer who has been searching for his sister since 2010, emphasized the importance of collective action in these difficult circumstances. He has participated in searches across several states, including Mexico City, highlighting the persistent challenge of locating individuals who have vanished under mysterious conditions. In addition to search operations, the government has announced new support measures aimed at helping families affected by disappearances. During a meeting held this week, officials pledged to provide financial assistance, housing, medical care, and psychological services to children and grandchildren of missing persons. The initiative was presented as part of a broader effort to address the emotional and social impact of prolonged searches. Families will be contacted starting August 1, with benefits distributed in phases throughout the following month. This commitment reflects growing recognition of the need to support victims beyond mere investigation. Representatives of the search commission, including Gómez, were present alongside government officials during the announcement. The initiative was welcomed by mothers and fathers who have spent years searching for their loved ones. One participant, Jacqueline Palmeros, expressed hope that the program would bring much-needed relief to families struggling with uncertainty. She noted that children of missing persons had directly urged authorities to accelerate their efforts, emphasizing the urgency of finding answers.
