The third installment of Gajin svet, titled Gajin svet 3: Vojni zločinci in najstniške klike, has emerged as one of the most anticipated Slovenian films of the year. The film, which follows the adventures of its teenage protagonist Gaja, expands significantly beyond the typical coming-of-age narrative, incorporating elements of action, war, and crime. It opens with Gaja starting her first day at high school, introducing viewers to the dynamics of cliques, friendships, and early romantic relationships. While this initial segment is described as somewhat predictable and morally didactic, it sets the stage for more intense developments later in the story. The plot takes a dramatic turn when Gaja's mother, Nina, is captured by a paramilitary group during a medical mission in a fictional war-torn country. During a video call with Gaja, the attack occurs, prompting her to seek help from Inspector Hace, a recurring character from previous installments. This leads Gaja into a complex web involving Alex, a former criminal from earlier films who is currently incarcerated. The police offer Alex a reduced sentence in exchange for his assistance, leading to his deployment to the conflict zone under the protection of the Slovenian military, which is participating in a peacekeeping mission there. As the story progresses, Gaja discovers Alex’s intentions to escape and intercepts him on a plane, compelling him to aid in rescuing her mother. From this point onward, the film transitions into an action-packed sequence featuring car chases, military operations involving tanks and helicopters, and international diplomatic efforts. Gaja becomes central to these events, dragging along Alex, who initially wants nothing more than freedom but gradually finds himself drawn back into the fray by Gaja’s determination. Gajin svet 3 builds upon the successful blend of youth drama and crime thriller established in the first two films. However, this installment elevates the genre further by incorporating elements of war cinema, a direction that Slovenian cinema has historically explored with notable success. Films such as Ne joči Peter and Dolina miru, both directed by Frane Štiglic, have set a precedent for combining realistic portrayals of military operations with gripping narratives. While Gajin svet 3 does not reach the heights of these classics, it makes a bold attempt to push the boundaries of the genre. The involvement of the Slovenian military in the film represents one of the most significant aspects of the production. According to director and co-screenwriter Petar Bratus, the collaboration extended beyond merely providing equipment and extras. Military advisors contributed to the depiction of the peacekeeping mission and the response mechanisms used to rescue citizens of Slovenia. This realism includes a final scene, referred to as a “cameo,” which some politicians may attempt to reinterpret as propaganda. The film features a stellar cast, with Uma Štader reprising her role as Gaja, delivering a performance as commanding as ever. Jurij Zrnec returns as Alex, while Sebastian Cavazza plays Gaja’s father, Peter. Lotus Vincent Šparovec portrays Inspector Hace, and Ajda Smrekar appears as Ema, Peter’s new partner. Returning actors Neža Smolinsky and Enej Černe Berčič have smaller roles compared to their previous contributions. Iva Krajnc Bagola takes on the role of Gaja’s mother, bringing depth and authority to the part. Newcomers include Jernej Kogovšek as a clumsy police inspector and Goran Navojac as the menacing leader of the paramilitary unit, whose presence adds considerable weight to the narrative without needing much screen time. The film’s approach to blending genres and its inclusion of military themes mark a significant evolution in the Gajin svet series. With its mix of youthful energy, action sequences, and serious undertones, Gajin svet 3 aims to captivate audiences while pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved within the Slovenian film industry.
