These visas were allegedly used to carry out a coordinated attack on Leipzig Airport on 4 August, where German police were forced to deploy a robot to disarm a drone containing an explosive device near a Ukrainian cargo plane. A second drone with traces of explosives was later discovered near the airport. In response to the attack, German authorities confirmed that their investigation concluded the incident was orchestrated by Russian operatives. As a result, Berlin plans to close Russia’s consulate in the former capital of Bonn later this month and terminate the lease for the Russian House, a cultural center in the capital city. The findings have led to urgent discussions among EU foreign ministers, who convened in Wicklow, Ireland, to address the growing threat posed by Russian-linked actors within the bloc.
