The decision came during the final stages of the previous season, as part of broader restructuring efforts tied to the move. In a conversation with Germanijak, Berger described being informed that the club sought a new approach and different communication strategies with fans, emphasizing that this was not due to dissatisfaction with his work. Berger explained that discussions about potential changes began toward the end of the season. A marketing department representative approached him for a meeting. After the last derby against Hajduk, he was told that the club was shifting toward a more modern style of engagement and wanted someone who could adapt to the new environment. He noted that while he understood the need for evolution, he had always been satisfied with his contributions. “I wasn’t doing anything wrong,” Berger said. “They’re happy with my work, but they want something new. They want a commentator who will already be working at Kranjčevićevu from this season, practicing on Maksimir. Everything worked out, I understand everything.” The club offered him another position within the organization, specifically as a coach for Dinamo II. However, Berger pointed out that the second team plays in Zadar, which complicates matters given his residence in Velika Gorica and his professional commitments. He sent a farewell email, expressing gratitude and acknowledging the difficulty of the situation. He added that while some relationships remain personal, the change is inevitable. When asked if he felt sad, Berger responded with a mix of emotion and acceptance. “Of course, 22 years isn’t a small period. I’ve structured my entire life around Dinamo.” He acknowledged that such a transition would have been harder a decade ago, but he feels content with his achievements. He also emphasized that his collaboration with Lokomotiva continues, showing that his connection to football extends beyond just one club. Born into a world where his voice became synonymous with Dinamo’s home matches, Berger has spent much of his career in service to the club. While many fans know him only by his distinctive voice, his professional background includes teaching history and geography. He joined the club’s commentary team as a guest commentator in the 2004/05 season and took on the role permanently in 2010, also commenting for Lokomotiva. His experience in HRT’s sports desk helped prepare him for the demands of live commentary. Over two decades, Berger became an inseparable part of Dinamo’s domestic fixtures, witnessing both its greatest triumphs and its darkest moments. He attended every match at Maksimir, adjusting his personal life to accommodate the schedule. Even now, despite the split with the club, he remains active as an official commentator for Lokomotiva, demonstrating his enduring passion for the sport.
