Senator Seriake Dickson, leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, issued a stern warning against the emergence of a "civilian dictatorship" during his speech at the Diplomatic Digest 6th Anniversary Lecture in Abuja on Friday. Speaking after receiving the Pillar of Nigeria Democracy Award, Dickson highlighted the dangers posed by elected leaders who undermine the Constitution and democratic institutions, drawing parallels to the era of military rule. The lecture, held in collaboration with the Diplomatic Correspondence Chapel, attracted diplomats and notable figures, including representatives from the Ghanaian High Commission, the Burkina Faso High Commission, and the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Dickson reflected on Nigeria's democratic progress since the country returned to civilian rule in 1999, emphasizing his long-standing involvement in shaping the nation's democratic framework. He underscored that while democracy remains the best path to national development, it demands unwavering adherence to the rule of law, transparent elections, and robust institutions. Dickson noted that despite Nigeria's departure from military governance, elected officials must avoid weakening democratic structures under the pretext of constitutional authority. The senator pointed to the declining democratic space across Africa, especially within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He expressed concern that Nigeria, historically a key advocate for regional integration and democratic governance, has seen its influence wane under the current administration. According to Dickson, this decline is evident in the formation of breakaway groups such as the Alliance of Sahel States, which he criticized as indicative of poor Nigerian leadership. He further lamented the impact of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government's ineffective foreign policy, which he claimed has led to the erosion of ECOWAS' strength. Dickson argued that Nigeria's leadership continues to play a crucial role in the stability and success of both ECOWAS and the African Union, yet recent developments suggest otherwise. In addition, Dickson urged President Bola Tinubu to prevent the misuse of democratic institutions for partisan gain. He emphasized that governments across Africa must honor constitutional mandates, including term limits and the organization of free, credible elections. The senator warned that when a government is viewed as authoritarian and above the law, it risks losing public trust and legitimacy. "When a government or political party begins to see itself as bigger than the nation, the Constitution, the judiciary, and other democratic institutions, it loses legitimate and popular support," Dickson said. "This remains one of the greatest threats to democracy in the ECOWAS sub-region and in Africa in general." As part of his call for accountability, Dickson encouraged ministers, governors, and other public officials to uphold the rule of law and reinforce democratic institutions through ethical leadership. Ahead of the 2027 general elections, he advocated for assurances regarding the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission, the judiciary, and security agencies, asserting that public confidence in the electoral process is vital to maintaining democratic integrity.
