Republicans are gaining momentum in key Senate races as the November election approaches, challenging Democratic assumptions about their chances. With less than 50 days remaining, the party has shown strength in battlegrounds such as New Hampshire, Minnesota, and Michigan, where races previously deemed unwinnable for Republicans are now considered competitive. New Hampshire, once a reliably Democratic state, has shifted into a toss-up race following a September 14 poll showing Republican John Sununu and Democrat Chris Pappas tied. The Cook Political Report revised its assessment of the race, moving it from “Lean Democrat” to “Toss Up.” Sununu, aiming to become the state's sole senator in Washington, D.C., has drawn support from both Republicans and independents. His recent Unity Breakfast with the New Hampshire Republican Party included a meeting with Scott Brown, whom he recently defeated in the primary. Pappas, however, expressed concern over the narrowing gap, warning supporters that the race is “tightening” and urging more fundraising. In Minnesota, the race between Democrat Peggy Flanagan and Republican Michele Tafoya has turned into a dead heat, with both candidates at 42% in the latest poll. Flanagan, who previously served alongside Governor Tim Walz, faces challenges due to allegations of fraud during their administration, which voters cite as a major issue. Tafoya, a former NFL sideline reporter, is gaining traction and hopes to secure a Republican victory in a statewide race since 2006. Flanagan has acknowledged the closeness of the race, telling donors there is “no room for error.” In Michigan, the contest between Republican Mike Rogers and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed is described as a statistical tie. Rogers' campaign has gained momentum, earning endorsements from the Detroit Regional Chamber Political Action Committee and the Detroit News editorial board. The chamber praised Rogers for prioritizing “the needs of Michigan and Michiganders,” while the newspaper criticized El-Sayed for avoiding condemnation of radical streamer Hasan Piker, who claimed America is worse than al-Qaeda. El-Sayed continues to distance himself from establishment voters, despite mounting pressure.
