While the lifting of sanctions represents a potential turning point, it does not automatically resolve all outstanding issues, including the handling of the S-400 systems. In addition to the S-400 controversy, Turkish defense officials voiced criticism toward a recent decision by the European Parliament regarding Cyprus. They rejected the body’s portrayal of Turkey’s 1974 military operation on the island, calling it “baseless, irrational and despicable.” Officials accused the European Parliament of failing to acknowledge alleged attacks against Turkish Cypriots and claimed the decision reflected a “one-sided approach based on Greek propaganda.” The Turkish government has consistently maintained that its actions in Cyprus were defensive, aimed at protecting the rights of Turkish Cypriots within the framework of the 1974 peace agreement. The European Parliament’s resolution, passed earlier this month, condemned the 1974 operation as a violation of international law and called for accountability for alleged human rights abuses. As negotiations continue, the outcome of the S-400 issue will likely shape the broader relationship between Turkey and the West. With the U.S. poised to reverse some of its punitive measures, the question remains whether Ankara will agree to dismantle or relocate the S-400 systems in order to meet American security concerns.
