A couple known for their deep admiration of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings saga has completed a seven-year project to construct a Hobbit-themed village in western Wales, investing over £500,000 in the endeavor. Phil Kilv, 60, and Sam Kilv, 53, have created a series of small, intricately designed homes nestled in the Cambrian Mountains, aiming to bring the fictional world of Middle-earth to life for visitors. Located near Tregaron in the county of Ceredigion, the village features three distinct cottages, each designed with attention to detail and inspired by the lore of Tolkien’s work. The properties include one and two-bedroom units equipped with log burners, four-poster beds, and flat-screen televisions, offering a blend of rustic charm and modern comforts. The cottages are situated within a 24-acre site called Coed Y Ddraig, surrounded by private woodland and offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Phil and Sam, both lifelong fans of Tolkien’s novels, have drawn heavily from the author’s connection to Wales, incorporating elements of Welsh culture and language into their designs. Their journey began over two decades ago when they relocated to the area, with Phil working as a classic motorcycle restorer and Sam pursuing a career in marketing. After transforming an old cowshed into a pirate-themed inn, the couple turned their focus toward the Lord of the Rings project, which they describe as a labor of love. The construction process involved extensive collaboration with local artisans, including blacksmiths who crafted custom bed frames and thrones for the homes. These structures are positioned outside the hillside dwellings, adding to the immersive experience for visitors. Each cottage is uniquely designed, reflecting different aspects of the Shire and other regions from Tolkien’s universe. One of the cottages, Pen Y Bag, is set in the year 1601 of the Third Age, aligning with the founding of the Shire according to Tolkien’s timeline. The couple plans to rent out the Hobbit homes starting later this year, with rates beginning at £180 per night. Guests will find themselves immersed in a fantasy environment complete with handcrafted interiors, curved architecture, and the tranquility of the surrounding woodland. Additional amenities such as smart TVs, walk-in showers, and underfloor heating ensure comfort without compromising the thematic experience. In addition to the Hobbit homes, the Kilvs have developed a pirate-themed inn featuring real sand and treasures, along with handmade skulls meant to evoke the eerie atmosphere of Davy Jones’ locker.
