Authorities in Panama have captured Andrés Felipe Arias, known by his alias "Chino Arias," who is suspected of murdering María del Pilar Zea Cobo, commonly referred to as "La Reina." The victim was the mother-in-law of renowned Colombian reggaeton artist Pipe Calderón and had ties to international drug trafficking networks. The arrest took place on July 28, 2026, following a joint operation involving Colombia's National Police, Interpol, and Panamanian authorities. Arias is believed to have committed the crime nearly a year earlier in Medellín, where Zea Cobo was shot dead in the parking lot of the exclusive Mall del Este. The investigation into her murder began immediately after the incident and led to the identification and eventual capture of Arias, who had been evading justice since the time of the crime. The killing occurred on May 8, 2025, in the southern part of Medellín. According to reports, Zea Cobo arrived at the mall with her partner, Jhon Fredy Toro Hincapié, a DJ and horseman. She met Arias in the parking lot, where they were supposed to discuss business related to narcotics. While Toro went inside to buy drinks, Arias entered the vehicle through the left side and sat in the back seat. Moments later, he fired two shots into Zea Cobo’s head, killing her instantly. Surveillance footage captured Arias fleeing the scene in a gray Chevrolet Emotion with license plates EKX 708, wearing a black hoodie and cap. When Toro returned with the drinks, he found Zea Cobo dead and rushed her to a nearby clinic, where she died shortly thereafter. Zea Cobo was not only the mother-in-law of Pipe Calderón but also had connections to a transnational cocaine trafficking network linked to the Gulf Clan. She was under investigation in the United States for these alleged activities and had become an informant for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Her involvement in the drug trade reportedly led to significant debts owed to various criminal organizations. Despite this, her family has emphasized that her death should not overshadow her personal life, stating that the focus should remain on honoring her memory rather than the criminal aspects of her past. The investigation into her murder intensified after the discovery of her links to organized crime. Authorities believe Arias may have acted in retaliation for her cooperation with U.S. law enforcement or due to disputes within the drug trafficking network. His identity was confirmed through testimony from Toro, who described him as a small, dark-skinned man in his mid-40s and a former low-profile leader in the Antioquia neighborhood gangs. This information, combined with surveillance footage and other evidence, led to an arrest warrant issued by a judge in Medellín. However, Arias managed to evade capture until his recent apprehension in Panama.
