The fire in Burgonhondo, near Ávila, has reached a critical turning point after nearly three weeks of relentless spread. On Tuesday, authorities confirmed that the perimeter of the blaze had not advanced since the fire began on July 22, marking a significant shift in its progression. The area affected spans approximately 47,000 hectares, making this one of the largest wildfires in recent memory. President of the Regional Government of Castile and Leon, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, emphasized during a press briefing that this moment represents a "point of inflection," though he warned that the situation remains under constant monitoring. Firefighters and emergency services have been working tirelessly to contain the blaze, with efforts intensifying over the past day and a half. The coordination among regional and national agencies, along with support from personnel from eleven autonomous communities and some European countries, has played a crucial role in slowing the fire’s advance. According to the Secretary General of Civil Protection, Virginia Barcones, the progress made so far is encouraging, although the task ahead remains immense. She noted that the fire has been described as a "monster" due to its size and complexity, requiring sustained effort to fully extinguish. The government has taken steps to begin relocating residents from evacuated municipalities, following the fulfillment of specific criteria. These include the absence of hotspots along the perimeter, a minimum of 48 hours without reactivation, and the assurance of safe road conditions allowing for the return of displaced citizens. Five towns, Fresnedilla, Higuera de las Dueñas, Burgohondo, Navaluenga, and Pedro Bernardo, have received authorization for relocation, while the confinement in Navaluenga and Las Navas del Marqués has been lifted. However, preventive evacuation continues in twelve other settlements, including Sotillo de La Adrada, La Adrada, El Hoyo de Pinares, and others, as well as active confinement measures in Cebreros and El Tiemblo. In response to the ongoing crisis, officials have urged caution, especially as a new heatwave is expected to begin on Wednesday. Barcones called for collective responsibility to avoid another such disaster, highlighting the importance of public awareness and cooperation. Fernández Mañueco reiterated the increased investment in wildfire prevention, noting that the budget for these efforts has more than tripled in recent years. He stressed the need for continued collaboration and unity among all stakeholders to address the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions. Meanwhile, operational efforts continue with the focus on maintaining the current containment lines and preventing any resurgence of the fire. Lieutenant Colonel Alfonso Arribas, head of the Firefighting Unit (UME), stated that work in Robledo de Chavela and Cebreros is progressing toward securing the perimeter. The UME plans to open controlled areas within the zones of control to further stabilize the front. In addition, Battalion Commander Pablo Samaniego explained that the advancement of the fire in the Mijares and Casillas regions has been effectively contained, contributing to the overall stability of the operation.
