Congress MP Rahul Gandhi accused the ruling regime of creating a system that suppresses critical thinking and favors blind followers, or andhbhakts, during a youth engagement event in Indore on Saturday. Speaking at the Chhatron ki Goonj program, Gandhi said the system, controlled by top BJP leaders and certain businessmen, feels threatened by students who ask questions. He described students as embodying curiosity, love, humility, courage, tolerance, and honesty, contrasting them sharply with blind followers, whom he characterized as delusional, hateful, arrogant, cowardly, patriarchal, and dishonest. Gandhi specifically criticized National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, accusing him of enabling surveillance of citizens' communication data to assist the government in exerting control over the population. He also pointed fingers at Union Home Minister Amit Shah, suggesting that Shah is responsible for suppressing students through methods such as beatings and the use of pellet guns. Additionally, Gandhi alleged that RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat had funneled millions of rupees to his organization to operate schools, colleges, and other educational institutions. During the event, Gandhi addressed concerns raised by students regarding the 13 per cent reservation in recruitment exams in Madhya Pradesh. He also highlighted the alleged diversion of public funds meant for education toward benefiting billionaires, citing the case of billionaire Gautam Adani and others. According to Gandhi, public money intended for education has instead been directed toward the personal gains of wealthy individuals and used for the marketing efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gandhi presented statistics showing a decline in the percentage of the national budget allocated to education, from 4.6 per cent in 2014 to 2.6 per cent currently. He claimed that Rs 7.7 lakh crore that should have been invested in education had instead gone to billionaires. Furthermore, he noted that 1.5 crore scholarships had been withdrawn from students over the past decade, and that one lakh government schools had been closed, with more than half of these closures occurring in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. A video shown at the event depicted the collapse of a five-storey building in Delhi’s Satya Niketan on September 6, which resulted in multiple fatalities. The family of one of the victims, 18-year-old Arpit Jaj, attended the event and spoke with Gandhi. His older sister, Priyanshi Jaj, expressed her belief that the incident was due to the irresponsibility of the system. In response to Gandhi's remarks, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav criticized the Congress leader, calling him a "careless politician" who had visited the state unprepared. Yadav stated that the issues raised by Gandhi were matters for which previous Congress governments were responsible. He pointed out that the UPA government had been in power from 2012 to 2013 and questioned the current state of medical colleges in Madhya Pradesh during the Congress rule. Yadav also challenged Gandhi on the lack of airports constructed in Madhya Pradesh during the Congress era, noting that the Janata Party had contributed to the opening of an airport in Khajuraho in 1977–1978. He emphasized that Gandhi should provide factual information before making allegations. Gandhi reiterated his belief that students hold the key to eradicating violence and hatred from the country. He stressed the importance of understanding the future of India through the lens of its youth, emphasizing that students possess qualities such as curiosity, love, humility, and openness to diverse perspectives. He argued that these attributes make students essential to the nation's progress and that the system seeks to suppress them by promoting blind loyalty instead.
