Another robot completed a 400-meter course in 39.7 seconds, surpassing the world record set by South African athlete Wayde van Niekerk in 43.03 seconds. Spectator and robotics investor Xu Qiaosheng noted the increased intensity of this year’s games, emphasizing the strain on robot batteries and cooling systems. He described the event as a significant milestone for China’s industrial development, highlighting the growing ambition to integrate advanced robotics into everyday labor. Beyond athletic feats, the games included traditional Chinese elements such as Tai Chi and pitch-pot, a game involving throwing arrow-like sticks into a narrow-necked vase. These events added cultural depth to the technological demonstration, blending heritage with innovation. However, the true test of the robots lay in their ability to navigate the complexities of the real world. Small imperfections, such as misaligned cables, objects slightly out of reach, or unstable packages, posed critical challenges. Lumos Robotics CEO Yu Chao acknowledged the potential of the games to drive improvements in hardware and offer visibility for the industry. Yet he stressed that long-term success depends on the robots’ ability to address real-world problems effectively. “Only when it can work in those end scenarios does it have real value,” Yu said, noting that mere speed and agility do not equate to practical utility. Similarly, Hua Rong, marketing head at Zeroth, emphasized that the ultimate measure of the technology’s worth would be its post-sale performance in solving user issues. The event also featured novel applications, such as an autonomous humanoid tennis match organized by Beijing-based startup Galbot. Robots competed in singles and doubles play, demonstrating skills like ball tracking, serving, and shot return. Other events tested robots in EV charging, restaurant service, emergency response, and hand-dexterity contests, alongside industrial assembly and material loading tasks. One particularly intricate challenge involved connecting cables, which required accurate vision recognition, mechanical alignment, and controlled force application. As the games continued, the focus remained on pushing the boundaries of robotic capability while addressing the practical hurdles that hinder widespread adoption. With over 50 events spanning diverse domains, the World Humanoid Robot Games aimed to showcase not only technical prowess but also the potential for robotics to transform industries and daily life.
