The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has named Adam as the first major storm of the 2026-2027 season, set to affect the Iberian Mediterranean region and the Balearic Islands starting Saturday. In a brief statement posted on social media, Aemet warned that this phenomenon will last at least until October 19 and will bring heavy and persistent showers to these areas. The agency advised residents to check current weather alerts and follow recommendations from civil protection authorities. Along with announcing the name Adam, Aemet shared a list of names for future storms, following alphabetical order. For the 2026-2027 season, Adam will be followed by Bruna, Charles, Diane, Eric, Flora, Gabriel, Heloise, Igor, Julia, Kevin, Lola, Michel, Nathalie, Oscar, Paola, Rafael, Sandra, Thomas, Vera, and Walter. Stable weather conditions in Spain will end over the weekend. The detachment and isolation of this storm over northern Spain will lead to widespread instability starting Saturday, while the shift of the anticyclone toward the British Isles will induce a humid flow from the east and northeast over the Iberian Mediterranean and Balearic regions. This will result in intense and persistent rainfall episodes. Additionally, the influx of cold air will cause a temperature drop, exacerbated by unusually high temperatures recorded recently for this time of year. For Friday, mostly clear skies will prevail across much of the country, except for northern Galicia and the Cantabrian area. Low clouds will appear in the morning in other regions of the northern third of the peninsula, eastern third, Melilla, and the Strait, generally clearing up by afternoon. In the afternoon, evolving clouds will form in large parts of the Atlantic coast and southern Andalusia, bringing showers and thunderstorms in mountainous areas, the northern Meseta, and around Alboran, which could be locally strong, though not ruled out in the Central System and Northern Iberia. A retrograde storm, moving from east to west instead of the usual west to east direction in Iberian latitudes, can bring intense rains due to the contrast between cold air at higher levels and warm, moist air from the still-warm Mediterranean. Due to uncertainty regarding the storm's position, surface winds, and their interactions, Aemet has not yet specified the spatial distribution and amount of precipitation. According to Aemet, Saturday 17 could see generalized afternoon thunderstorms in the southern half of the peninsula, potentially strong in the southeast third. Heavy rain is also expected in eastern Catalonia during the afternoon, possibly very strong and persistent, accompanied by thunderstorms. Sunday 18 and Monday 19 are likely to be the most adverse days, again featuring widespread showers in the southeastern part of the country. In Las Rozas de Madrid, today’s forecast includes some changes, beginning with clear skies until the afternoon, transitioning to few clouds for the rest of the day according to Aemet. Temperatures will remain similar to yesterday, reaching 27 degrees Celsius, with minimum temperatures fluctuating around 12. Winds from the south will be calm. Tomorrow, Saturday, will feature abundant clouds with rain until midday, after which cloud cover will decrease. Maximum temperatures will drop to around 23 degrees, while minimum temperatures will stay close to today’s values. Light northeasterly winds will predominate. On Sunday, there are expected to be precipitations, with very cloudy conditions and light rain in the first half of the day. Rainfall will cease by noon, and the sky will become less cloudy. Maximum temperatures will remain nearly unchanged at 21 degrees, while minimum temperatures will fall to 9. Light northeasterly winds will blow. Other nearby towns include Brunete, where skies will be clear throughout the day, with temperatures ranging from 13 to 28 degrees. In Toledo, the sky will have few clouds in the early part of the day and no clouds after noon. Minimum temperatures will be below 13 degrees, and maximum temperatures will reach 29 degrees.
