Groups renew call to repeal anti-terror laws

Human rights groups in the Philippines have called for the repeal of two anti-terrorism laws, arguing that they have been misused to suppress political dissent and violate civil liberties. The Anti-Terrorism Act and the Terrorism Financing Prevention and Suppression Act have reportedly been used to arrest and detain activists and ordinary citizens, with over 256 individuals charged under these laws. Critics claim the laws allow for arbitrary designations of individuals or groups as terrorists without proper legal procedures, leading to asset freezes and restrictions on humanitarian work. Activists argue that these laws have failed to achieve their intended goals and have instead become tools for political repression.

59 Bicol areas, entire Catanduanes declared insurgency-free – Army

The Philippine Daily Inquirer reports that 57 municipalities in the Bicol region, two cities, and the entire province of Catanduanes have been designated as 'insurgency-free' by the military under the Stable Internal Peace and Security (SIPS) program. This designation follows the neutralization of 66 New People’s Army (NPA) members between January and July 2024, including four killed, one captured, two arrested, and 59 who surrendered. The criteria for SIPS status include dismantling guerrilla fronts, no CTG-related violence for over a year, absence of KKER barangays, and functioning ITDS systems. Additional municipalities in Sorsogon and Masbate are anticipated to join the list as security operations progress. Officials highlighted collaborative efforts among military, police, government agencies, and communities in achieving peace.

2 married Caraga cops face adultery, admin raps for alleged affair

Two married police officers based in the Caraga region of the Philippines are facing criminal and administrative charges after being allegedly caught in a compromising situation during a private encounter in a rented room in Butuan City. The incident was reportedly discovered by the wife of one of the officers, leading to the filing of a criminal complaint for adultery and separate administrative cases against both individuals. The Police Regional Office-13 (PRO-13) emphasized that such misconduct undermines the integrity of the police force and violates the moral and professional standards expected of PNP members. The regional police office stated that the investigation into the case would be conducted impartially and transparently, with potential consequences including dismissal if the allegations are proven true. PRO-13 reiterated its commitment to maintaining high standards of conduct within the police organization.

Angara urges schools to maximize PTAs in promoting school safety

Philippine Education Secretary Sonny Angara urged schools to leverage Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) as essential partners in enhancing school safety and student well-being. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between schools, families, and communities to prevent school-related violence and ensure children's safety. Under DepEd Order No. 13, s. 2022, PTAs are recognized as platforms for addressing student concerns, supporting learners, and mobilizing communities around child protection. Angara highlighted the need for proactive communication through PTA meetings to identify potential issues early and foster trust. Additionally, he encouraged PTAs to organize activities like parenting seminars, digital safety workshops, and community dialogues to strengthen school communities.
