A recent study reveals that participating in zoo-based educational programs enhances individuals' sense of connection to nature, particularly among those who initially felt only moderately connected to the natural world. Researchers from Goethe University Frankfurt, working alongside 20 zoological institutions across Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Portugal, found that such programs can lead to measurable improvements in participants' environmental awareness and engagement. The findings were published in the journal People and Nature and highlight the potential of zoos as platforms for ecological education beyond entertainment and conservation efforts. The study focused on evaluating the effectiveness of various zoo education initiatives, including guided tours, workshops, and multi-day programs. Participants completed surveys before and after engaging in these activities, allowing researchers to assess shifts in their perceived relationship with nature. Factors considered included age, gender, frequency of zoo visits, program duration, inclusion of direct animal interaction, and coverage of themes such as biodiversity and species conservation. According to Professor Paul Dierkes, who leads the Department of Life Sciences Education at Goethe University and holds the Opel-Zoo Endowed Professorship in Zoo Animal Biology, the goal was to determine whether these educational experiences could genuinely enhance people’s connection to nature and how individual backgrounds influenced outcomes. “We wanted to understand how different groups respond to these programs,” he explained. Results indicated that individuals with lower or moderate initial connections to nature benefited most from the educational interventions. Those who participated in programs featuring direct animal encounters, discussions on biodiversity, or extended durations saw the most significant improvements. For example, participants who had limited prior exposure to nature-related content experienced notable growth in their sense of belonging to the natural world. Dr. Matthias Kleespies, a co-author of the study, emphasized the importance of targeting audiences who might otherwise remain disengaged from environmental issues. “This is crucial for environmental education because these programs are specifically designed to reach people who feel disconnected,” he noted. He added that the findings underscore the value of tailoring educational strategies to meet diverse needs and interests. Frequent visitors to zoos demonstrated greater increases in their connection to nature compared to occasional attendees. This suggests that regular engagement with zoo environments may contribute to sustained interest in ecological matters. Additionally, children with initially low or moderate levels of connection to nature showed substantial improvements, indicating that early exposure to such programs could have long-term benefits. Gender also played a role in the results, with female participants reporting slightly higher increases in their sense of connection to nature than their male counterparts. While the reasons behind this difference were not fully explored in the study, it adds another layer to understanding how demographic factors influence responses to environmental education. Despite the positive outcomes for some groups, the study also noted that individuals who already had a strong connection to nature showed smaller measurable changes. However, researchers caution against interpreting this as a limitation of the programs. Instead, they suggest that the measurement tools used in the study may have reached their upper limits for these participants. “Those who start with high scores have less room for change, but the programs can still reinforce and deepen their existing attitudes,” Dierkes explained. The research underscores the multifaceted role of zoos in promoting environmental awareness and offers insights into optimizing future educational initiatives. By identifying which groups benefit most from specific types of programs, zoos can refine their approaches to better serve all visitors. As the demand for experiential learning continues to grow, these findings provide a foundation for developing more impactful and inclusive conservation education strategies.
