His death was confirmed by acting head of the Riau Natural Resources Conservation Agency, Ujang Holisudin, who stated that Jovi succumbed to complications arising from digestive and upper respiratory infections that led to severe muscle weakness. Jovi first exhibited symptoms of illness on July 1, including a loss of appetite, tremors, stiffness in his legs, trunk, and tail, and difficulty standing. Veterinary staff at the center immediately initiated treatment in line with established protocols for wildlife health care. Over the course of the following weeks, the medical team administered continuous intravenous fluids, vitamins, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, amino acids, and supportive care, alongside regular laboratory testing to monitor his condition. On Sunday, Jovi’s condition worsened significantly after he ceased eating and drinking despite ongoing treatment. Medical team coordinator Rini Deswita noted that his body temperature spiked to approximately 40 degrees Celsius around 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Despite continued efforts, including intravenous treatment, oral and rectal fluid therapy, and additional supportive measures, Jovi’s health continued to decline. He experienced severe tremors at 8:43 p.m., and was officially declared dead at 8:47 p.m. local time. Following the elephant’s passing, a post-mortem examination was conducted, and his remains were subsequently buried in accordance with conservation protocols set by the agency. Jovi, originally from Indragiri Hulu District, had spent over two decades at the Minas Elephant Training Center since arriving there on February 18, 1998. During this time, he played a crucial role in reducing human-wildlife conflicts in multiple regions of Riau Province. His contributions were widely recognized within the community and among conservationists. Jovi was one of the few trained elephants used in conflict mitigation efforts, helping to prevent incidents involving both humans and wild elephants.
