A 78-year-old former swimming coach, George Gibney, has been convicted of 39 counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape following a trial at the Central Criminal Court. The sentencing hearing revealed harrowing accounts from four women who were sexually abused by Gibney during the 1970s and 1980s. One survivor described him as a “manipulative, brazen, cowardly predator” who exploited her innocence as a child. Another survivor recounted how Gibney was “hero-worshipped” by the establishment despite his crimes, and expressed hope that the public would now recognize him as a “convicted, serial paedophile.” The abuse took place between 1971 and 1981, spanning multiple locations in south county Dublin, including Glenalbyn swimming pool in Stillorgan and Newpark Sports Centre in Blackrock. The victims ranged in age from eight to 15 at the time of the assaults. The nature of the abuse included kissing, inappropriate touching, digital penetration, forced oral sex, and, in one instance, attempted rape. These incidents occurred while Gibney was coaching young athletes, placing him in positions of trust and authority over his victims. Gibney’s defense attorney, Patrick Gageby SC, stated that Gibney accepts the jury's verdict and will not pursue an appeal. He acknowledged that Gibney once enjoyed “some deserved fame” for his contributions to sports training, though this reputation has since crumbled. Gageby emphasized that Gibney is currently in poor health and has undergone a personal transformation, no longer the individual responsible for the offenses against children under his care. He requested that the court consider Gibney’s guilty pleas to certain charges and his lack of prior criminal record. Originally charged with 78 counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape, Gibney pleaded guilty to five counts of indecent assault and not guilty to the rest. The jury ultimately returned not guilty verdicts on 33 counts of indecent assault involving two of the complainants. Gibney was found guilty of 12 counts of indecent assault concerning the first complainant, with one count dismissed. His guilty pleas pertained to the same complainant. One of the survivors, in her victim impact statement, thanked the Gardaí for treating her with respect and dignity. She criticized the legal system for referring to her as “just a witness for the state” at one point, which she felt highlighted the dehumanizing treatment of victims. She described herself as “a victim first and a witness for the state second,” emphasizing the emotional toll of recounting her trauma before a courtroom audience. She also condemned the media for sensationalizing her story, calling them “licking their chops salaciously imagining their headlines.” She reflected on her past, describing herself as a “clueless, innocent child of the era” and Gibney as a “manipulative, brazen, cowardly predator.” She lamented the lasting effects of the abuse, stating that she had endured “shame, hurt and bewilderment for half a century” in a “frozen nightmare” that has never fully resolved. The other survivors similarly detailed the psychological and emotional scars left by Gibney’s actions. Their testimonies underscored the long-term consequences of childhood sexual abuse and the importance of justice for victims. As the sentencing proceeds, the focus remains on the victims' experiences and the broader implications of such cases for accountability and support systems.
