The Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile has unveiled a groundbreaking image capturing more than 500,000 galaxies and over 50,000 stars in a single frame. This achievement was made possible through the observatory’s 3.2-billion-pixel LSST Camera, the largest digital camera ever constructed. The image, created by stacking hundreds of exposures, provides an unprecedented glimpse into the cosmos, revealing intricate details of distant celestial objects. The image was taken using the 8.4-meter Simonyi Survey Telescope, which houses the LSST Camera. Rather than relying on a single shot, the team compiled multiple images, layering them to enhance visibility of faint, distant light. The resulting composite image showcases a variety of galactic structures, including spiral galaxies with distinct arms, smooth elliptical galaxies, and galaxies in the midst of collisions. Faint red galaxies, believed to be among the earliest formed in the universe, also appear in the scene. A minimal number of bright stars from the Milky Way are visible in the foreground, contributing to the image’s visual impact. This particular area of the sky, known as the COSMOS field, has been a focal point for astronomical research for over two decades. Observations began with the Hubble Space Telescope in 2003, followed by contributions from numerous advanced telescopes worldwide. The field’s strategic location, situated away from the dense regions of the Milky Way, allows for clearer views of distant galaxies. This unobstructed perspective enables scientists to study galaxies at varying distances, effectively providing a historical record of the universe’s evolution. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s involvement brings new dimensions to the COSMOS field. Its approach includes both depth and breadth, offering a comprehensive view of the sky. Through repeated imaging over time, the observatory constructs a dynamic record of celestial changes. This aligns with the observatory’s long-term goal of conducting the Legacy Survey of Space and Time, a ten-year initiative aimed at creating the most detailed and continuously updated map of the universe. The recent image represents the Early Data Preview 2 (EDP2) from the observatory, marking the first data release specifically derived from LSST Camera observations. The data spans from April 2025 to January 2026 and encompasses approximately 3,000 square degrees of the night sky, equivalent to about one-sixth of the visible Southern Hemisphere. Bob Blum, Director of Rubin Observatory at NSF NOIRLab, emphasized that the COSMOS image is merely the start of what lies ahead. Future observations are anticipated to unveil even more distant galaxies and finer details, enhancing our understanding of the cosmos. As the observatory continues its work, the COSMOS field is expected to yield valuable insights into transient cosmic phenomena such as supernovae.
