In the Adriatic, invasive species, such as the lionfish and the green sea urchin, are growing more common. These newcomers pose a potential threat to indigenous populations, according to experts. Some of these species are described as being more aggressive than their native counterparts, capable of displacing them from their habitats, competing for food resources, or even acting as predators in large numbers. This dynamic has raised concerns among marine biologists and conservationists alike. Ela Pahor, a specialist at the Aquarium in Pula, explained to HRT journalist Anita Bartolović that certain invasive species can significantly impact the existing marine environment. She noted that these species often exhibit behaviors that make them particularly effective competitors or predators, which could lead to long-term disruptions in the region’s biodiversity. Recent studies reveal that the Mediterranean Sea, including the Adriatic, is warming faster than previously anticipated. Scientists emphasize that this accelerated warming contributes to more frequent extreme weather conditions. Dr. Martin Pfannkuchen, head of a laboratory at the Ruđer Bošković Institute in Rovinj, stated that over the past decade, the northern Adriatic has experienced a rapid increase in temperature. On average, annual sea surface temperatures have risen by more than 2.7 degrees Celsius. This rate of change sets a record for the entire Mediterranean and all European seas. Human activity further exacerbates these environmental pressures. The marine ecosystem is burdened by pollution, runoff from rivers carrying contaminants, and chemical waste. Pfannkuchen pointed out that rising temperatures create favorable conditions for harmful bacteria to thrive, potentially altering the microbial composition of coastal waters. He added that many habitats, especially along the coastlines, have disappeared, with shallow waters showing the most visible effects. “We can say that we have undergone very significant changes,” he remarked, noting that the Adriatic today looks vastly different from how it did four decades ago.
