On Sunday evening, Robert Mayer, president of the federal fire service command, appeared on the TV show “ZiB 2” hosted by Marie-Claire Zimmermann. Mayer emphasized that the risk of forest fires is extremely high due to ongoing drought conditions. He outlined several scenarios he had prepared, which he hoped would remain hypothetical. Mayer noted that while the fire services were well-prepared, the lack of water posed a major challenge. To combat this, helicopters are being used to deliver firefighting water, with support from the Austrian army, interior ministry, police, and private companies. The most intense efforts were focused on a woodland area near the Murtal motorway (S35), where a half-hectare area was affected. Two helicopters from the police and military were actively engaged in the operation. Nearby, at Hochanger, the fire was declared under control by Sunday morning after being fought during the night. A third incident occurred at another location, though it is currently contained. All three fires are believed to have started due to lightning strikes following a thunderstorm. Firefighters were initially alerted around 7 p.m. on Saturday, and operations resumed on Sunday morning, with completion expected later that day. Meanwhile, in France and Spain, thousands of firefighters and volunteers are battling some of Europe’s largest wildfires. In Bordeaux, a massive blaze that began near Saumos has devastated nearly 42,000 hectares, an area equivalent to the city of Vienna. Over 240 homes have been destroyed, and more than 224,000 residents have been evacuated. More than 6,200 emergency workers, including soldiers and police officers, continue their efforts alongside hundreds of local farmers, winemakers, and volunteers. Despite recent improvements, the threat remains, as smoldering underground fires could reignite at any moment. The air quality has deteriorated significantly, with hazardous levels of fine dust affecting nearby areas. Residents such as Alexandra have fled to safer locations, fearing the health risks to her young child. Dr. François Pantaloni, head physician at the fire and rescue department in Mérignac, reports that smoke inhalation injuries are the most common issue among firefighters. He notes that teams are dispatched daily to provide medical aid to frontline workers, rather than waiting for them to seek help. Over 267 firefighters have sustained injuries, many suffering from blisters on their feet due to the harsh conditions. High temperatures further strain the workforce, prompting strict hydration protocols. Dr. Pantaloni emphasizes the importance of maintaining adequate fluid intake, recommending up to four liters per person per day. Additionally, ice baths are available to prevent heat-related illnesses. Fake news has also complicated the response efforts. A social media post falsely claimed that 20 firefighters had been injured and left without medical care. When the claim surfaced, teams were sent to locate these individuals, only to discover it was a hoax. This misinformation wasted valuable time and resources. Despite these challenges, Dr. Pantaloni remains optimistic, citing the overwhelming solidarity and support from both national and international teams. In southern Spain, near Madrid, the situation is equally dire. Axel Mahlau, a retired teacher, lost his life's work, a botanical garden spanning nine hectares and featuring 1,700 different plant species. After a week-long evacuation, he returned to find everything reduced to ash. The destruction highlights the broader impact of these wildfires, not just on human lives but on ecosystems and cultural heritage.
