A recent warning has emerged regarding five common kitchen ingredients that can become toxic after their expiration dates, emphasizing the importance of proper storage and timely consumption. These items, often stored in pantries, require special attention due to potential health risks associated with consuming them beyond their safe usage periods. The distinction between "best before" and "use by" dates plays a crucial role in determining whether food remains safe for consumption. The confusion between these two labels is critical. The "best before" date refers to quality rather than safety, indicating that products such as pasta, coffee, or canned goods might lose flavor over time but remain safe if stored correctly. In contrast, the "use by" date pertains to safety and is found on foods that spoil quickly microbiologically. Consuming such products past this date could pose direct health risks, including symptoms like cramps, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting caused by pathogenic bacteria. Food spoilage is primarily attributed to bacteria, mold, and yeast. While some of these organisms merely cause food to deteriorate, pathogenic bacteria can lead to serious foodborne illnesses. It's essential to recognize that even long-lasting foods have limits, especially if they haven't been stored properly. For example, apple cider vinegar can last indefinitely, whereas flour and rice have significantly shorter shelf lives and can become hazardous if consumed after their expiration dates and improper storage conditions. Many foods become long-lasting through processes such as heat treatment or drying, which eliminate microorganisms. After these treatments, it is vital that they are packed in airtight, sterile containers to maintain their integrity. However, despite all precautions, some basic pantry staples may harbor potential risks. Five categories of products should receive particular attention and be avoided once their shelf life has expired, as they can become sources of dangerous bacteria and toxins. Flour is one such item. Even within its validity period, it is considered raw food. Grains used in its production can be exposed to harmful bacteria such as E. coli and salmonella. Milling and bleaching processes do not destroy these dangerous microorganisms, making the consumption of raw dough exceptionally risky. These bacteria are only destroyed at high temperatures during baking or cooking. Special attention should also be given to rice. Whether cooked or raw, it poses a risk. Raw rice often contains spores of the bacterium Bacillus cereus, which can survive cooking. If cooked rice is left too long at room temperature, bacteria can multiply and cause food poisoning. While the consumption of most foods after the "best before" date is generally tolerated, there is one exception where compromise is not possible, infant formula. The "use by" date marked on these products is strict and absolute. Manufacturers are required to indicate the exact date until which they guarantee the nutritional value and health safety of the formula. After this date, not only does the amount of key nutrients decrease, but there is also a risk of bacterial contamination that can be extremely dangerous for infants' sensitive immune systems. Unopened packages should be stored in a cool and dry place at home, never in a garage, vehicle, or outdoors. Once opened, powder packaging should be used within a month and kept tightly sealed in a dry place, but not in the refrigerator. Potatoes are versatile ingredients, yet they don’t last as long as other pantry staples. Under ideal conditions, in a cool and dark place, they can be stored for a month to two months. Potatoes that have passed their expiration date usually become soft and may develop a musty odor, indicating spoilage. Proper storage and awareness of expiration dates are essential to prevent health issues linked to consuming expired food products.

Procjena pristranosti (Sredina): Članak predstavlja činjenične informacije o sigurnosti hrane i datumima isteka, bez da otvoreno favorizira bilo koju političku ideologiju.

Zašto činjenice (85): The article provides generally accurate information about food safety, distinguishing between 'best before' and 'use by' dates. It mentions specific examples like coffee, pasta, and canned goods as safe after the 'best before' date if stored properly. However, some details are vague or incomplete, s

Zašto objektivnost (75): The tone is somewhat alarmist, using phrases like 'tempirana bomba u kuhinji' ('timed bomb in the kitchen') and 'postaju otrovne' ('become poisonous'), which may exaggerate the risk. While it does provide useful advice, it leans toward caution and fear-mongering rather than presenting a strictly neu
