An Italian teacher from Benevento has been left facing a potential two-year ban from teaching contracts after being assigned a position over 127 kilometers away from her home due to an error in the official rankings used for assigning temporary teaching roles. The mistake, which affected the calculation of her points in the regional substitute teacher rankings, forced her to decline the assignment, triggering new stricter rules that penalize teachers who refuse such positions. The teacher was assigned a one-year contract in a school located approximately two hours from her residence in Molise, requiring four hours of travel each day. According to her account, the error occurred during the preparation of the provincial substitute teacher rankings, known as GPS, which were updated for the period 2026–2028. These rankings determine how temporary teaching assignments are allocated to educators. Applications had to be submitted between February 26 and March 16. However, when she accessed the system, she noticed discrepancies in her score, particularly missing points related to previous years of service, specifically, 12 points for one year of work and 6 points for another. She attempted to resolve the issue with the school’s administration, who directed her to the SIDI system, the information system managed by the Ministry of Education and Merit. But the SIDI office informed her that the responsibility lay with the school's secretariat instead. On March 16, the deadline for submitting applications, she contacted the secretariat again, but they assured her everything was in order. Despite this, her corrected score still did not appear. She then reached out directly to the regional education office. At the time, a staff member advised her to proceed with her application while sending an email with supporting documents and contracts proving her previous service. She submitted her request, but when the rankings were published on July 28, she realized the error remained unresolved. She immediately raised the issue again, noting that the system allowed five days for reporting errors. However, she was abroad during that window and unable to access the internet. She had already alerted multiple offices since March 16, providing all necessary documentation. In August, she contacted the regional education office once more, only to be told to send another email because some departments were closed for holidays. The email was sent, but there was no response. That evening, however, she received notification of her assignment, despite the unresolved discrepancy in her score. The teacher claims that the error in her ranking led to an incorrect placement, forcing her to choose between accepting a distant and inconvenient job or risking penalties under the new regulations. After declining the assignment, she now faces a two-year exclusion from receiving any annual teaching contracts, a rule introduced to discourage teachers from rejecting positions. Her experience highlights the challenges faced by educators navigating complex administrative systems. The process of correcting errors appears fragmented, with unclear lines of responsibility among different offices. Her attempts to rectify the situation through multiple channels were met with delays and conflicting instructions, ultimately leading to a decision she did not want to make. The incident has sparked concerns about the reliability of the ranking system and the clarity of procedures for addressing mistakes. Teachers rely heavily on these rankings to secure stable employment, especially given the precarious nature of their work. Any miscalculations can have serious consequences, particularly with the recent tightening of rules regarding refusal of assignments. The teacher continues to seek resolution, hoping that the authorities will recognize the error and allow her to apply for future positions without penalty. Meanwhile, she is left in limbo, uncertain whether she will be able to continue working in the coming years. The case underscores the need for greater transparency and efficiency in the management of educational resources and personnel, ensuring that administrative errors do not unfairly impact individuals' professional lives.
