The Serbian basketball team withdrew from the Mediterranean Games over the participation of Kosovo's national squad in the 3x3 competition. According to the Kosovo Basketball Association, the top two teams will advance to the quarterfinals. The situation arose during the 3x3 men’s tournament at the Mediterranean Games, held in the city of Split, Croatia. The Serbian team, known for its dominance in the format, had previously won six world championships since 2012. This year’s World Cup saw them finish third, behind Latvia and Germany. Despite their success, the team chose not to compete against Kosovo, citing political reasons related to recognition. The move has sparked discussions among sports officials and organizers about the role of international competitions in addressing geopolitical tensions. The Kosovo Basketball Association expressed disappointment with the decision, emphasizing that sports should bring people together rather than create divisions. Stavri Bello, head of the organizing committee for the Mediterranean Games, commented on the situation. He stated that while he was aware of previous instances where Serbia and Kosovo have faced each other in sports, the current circumstances required a resolution. Bello emphasized that the core purpose of the games is to promote unity through sport and suggested that the organizing committee would determine how to proceed. “There is no reason to make exceptions between national teams,” he said, underscoring the importance of maintaining the integrity of the competition. The withdrawal of the Serbian team has raised questions about the broader implications for international sports diplomacy.
