A man from the mountainous Balkans, known as the “Samurai,” has been celebrated in a dramatic tale of defiance against foreign powers. The story centers around Aleksandar Lekso Saičić, a soldier who fought in the Russo-Japanese War, which began on February 8, 1904, when Japan declared war on Russia. This conflict, which lasted over a year and a half, marked one of the most unexpected and dramatic duels in military history. According to historical accounts, on the day Japan announced its declaration of war, Russian forces were still unaware of the impending conflict. Just three hours before the official announcement reached Saint Petersburg, Japanese naval units launched an attack on Port Arthur, a key Russian Pacific port. This sudden strike initiated a war that would reshape the balance of power in East Asia and challenge the dominance of European empires. The origins of this conflict can be traced back to broader geopolitical tensions. The Russo-Japanese War was primarily fought over control of Korea and Manchuria, regions rich in resources and strategic importance. It shocked many observers, including the Russian Empire, which had long considered itself a dominant force in global affairs. Japan’s bold move surprised even its allies and set the stage for a brutal and prolonged conflict. Meanwhile, in the Balkans, the principality of Montenegro emerged as a symbol of resistance against foreign domination. After centuries of struggle against the Ottoman Empire, Montenegro gained international recognition at the Congress of Berlin in 1878. This victory allowed the small nation to assert its independence and resist further encroachment by larger powers, particularly Russia. Montenegro's relationship with Russia dates back to the early 18th century. In 1718, Prince Danilo of Montenegro traveled to Russia and formed an alliance with Emperor Peter the Great. This partnership led to increased Russian support for Montenegrin nobility and helped establish Montenegro as a bulwark against Ottoman expansion. Over time, a powerful slogan took root among Montenegrins: “Nas i Rusa, dvjesta miliona” (“Us and Russians, two hundred million”), reflecting their deep ties to the Russian Empire. This bond became especially evident during the Russo-Japanese War. On February 8, 1904, under the rule of King Nikola I, Montenegro pledged its support to Russia. While the assistance was symbolic, it carried immense emotional weight. A group of volunteers, including young men eager to prove themselves, joined the Russian army. Among them was Aleksandar Lekso Saičić, a brave and determined soldier whose actions would later become legendary. Born in the village of Vinicka near Berane in northern Montenegro, Saičić received his military training in Cetinje and later studied at a gymnasium in Dubrovnik. He continued his education in Belgrade, where he graduated from a cadet school. His early career included service in the Ottoman army, where he rose to the rank of captain. However, after the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War, he decided to join the ranks of Montenegrin volunteers under the leadership of Jovan Lipovac. His journey to the Far East was documented years later, in April 1911, when an article appeared in Glas Crnogorca, a newspaper based in Montenegro. The piece described Saičić’s decision to leave his position in Turkey and travel to Manchuria, where he joined the Russian military. There, he served bravely in the front lines, enduring severe hardships and suffering multiple injuries. Saičić was wounded three times during the war. His first injury occurred during battles in Korea, where a projectile struck him on the right side of his body. Later, he sustained another wound during the famous Battle of Mukden in Manchuria. Despite these injuries, he refused to seek medical treatment and continued fighting with unwavering courage. His bravery earned him respect among both his comrades and the wider public. Saičić’s legacy is remembered as a symbol of Montenegrin resilience and sacrifice. His participation in the Russo-Japanese War highlights the complex interplay between regional conflicts and global geopolitics. As the war drew to a close, his story became part of the collective memory of Montenegro, reinforcing the nation’s identity as a fighter for freedom and independence.
