Shining blue light on gold-graphene nanodots achieves wound healing trifecta

Researchers from China have developed a novel nanocomposite made of gold nanoparticles and graphene oxide quantum dots that, when activated by blue light, can simultaneously kill bacteria, clean wounds, and promote healing. The material creates a Schottky junction, enhancing the production of reactive oxygen species (which destroy bacteria) and improving light-to-heat conversion for photothermal effects. This approach achieves nearly 97% bacterial eradication against both gram-positive and gram-negative strains, offering an antibiotic-free alternative to combat antimicrobial resistance. The method addresses limitations of existing light-based therapies by combining photodynamic and photothermal effects into a single system.
