The final ceremony of the Dubrovnik Summer Games took place with a grand concert featuring legendary Spanish tenor José Carreras, who performed before Dubrovnik's cathedral on Thursday, August 27, 2026. The event was held in the historic core of the city, protected by UNESCO, offering a unique setting for the performance. Carreras was joined by soprano Dušica Bijelić and accompanied by the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra under the baton of renowned conductor David Giménez, a long-time collaborator of Carreras. The concert featured a night of top-tier operatic and classical music, taking place on one of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful open-air stages. The concert marked the culmination of Dubrovnik's efforts to promote itself as a premier venue for world-class artists and cultural experiences. According to Dubrovnik Mayor Mato Franković, the combination of the city's historical backdrop with high-level international performances continues to solidify Dubrovnik's reputation as a leading cultural destination. The event drew widespread attention, with more than half of the tickets sold within less than 24 hours, highlighting its popularity among both local and international audiences. José Carreras has been a towering figure in the global operatic scene for decades. Known for his interpretations of Verdi and Puccini operas, he has performed over 60 operatic roles throughout his career and sold more than 85 million audio recordings. He gained wider recognition as part of the famous operatic trio “Three Tenors,” alongside Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti, whose concerts have left an indelible mark on the history of classical music and set records that remain unmatched today. Beyond his artistic achievements, Carreras is also known for his humanitarian work. After overcoming leukemia in 1987, he founded the International José Carreras Foundation, which has supported research and treatment for this serious illness for decades. His presence at the concert underscored the intersection of artistry and philanthropy, reinforcing the significance of the event beyond mere entertainment.
