France and the United Kingdom have announced their intention to collaborate with Oman to ensure safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global trade. According to a joint statement released by Paris and London, the Sultanate of Oman has agreed to work with both nations to secure maritime traffic within its territorial waters. The United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding last month after high-level talks in Switzerland's Bürgenstock. However, the issue of the Strait of Hormuz remains contentious, and full resumption of shipping through the strait has yet to occur. Despite repeated warnings from Iran against the presence of foreign naval forces in this strategic region, Britain and France continue to push forward with their plans.
Oman, known traditionally as a mediator in the Middle East, has already led discussions with Iran regarding the joint management of the Strait of Hormuz. According to reports from The New York Times, there is even a plan for both countries to charge tolls for passage through the strait. Nevertheless, Oman insists it will not participate in any agreements that violate international law.
In response to the joint declaration, Tehran issued a stern warning. Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that the Strait of Hormuz is not a military parade ground for extra-regional powers and stressed that only coastal states of the Persian Gulf bear the exclusive responsibility for the safety of this maritime route.
President Macron also clarified the extent of France's involvement in the region. Paris has reportedly deployed two minesweepers, two frigates, and a naval patrol aircraft to the area to ensure maritime security. The United States and Iran signed a memorandum on June 17 aimed at ending nearly four months of war and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Both countries have set 60 days to negotiate a lasting peace agreement.
