On a small island in Lake Victoria, just over half the size of a football pitch, more than 500 people live in close quarters. This unusual settlement, known as Migingo, is one of the densest inhabited islands in the world. Located in the heart of Lake Victoria, the largest freshwater lake in Africa, Migingo has become a unique example of human adaptation to extreme conditions. The island measures approximately 2,000 square meters, roughly equivalent to half a standard soccer field. Despite its tiny size, it hosts a vibrant community during certain times of the year. According to the last official census conducted in 2009, there were 131 residents recorded, but this number fluctuates significantly throughout the year. Many fishermen from neighboring countries such as Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania arrive on Migingo during peak fishing seasons, drawn by the rich waters of Lake Victoria. Life on Migingo is characterized by minimal space and maximal utility. The homes, constructed from corrugated metal sheets, are built side by side with narrow passageways connecting them. Every inch of space is used for storing nets, engines, fishing gear, and other essentials. There are no trees or green spaces, and the landscape appears almost entirely covered in metal rooftops from above. Daily life on the island continues despite these constraints. Small shops, bars, and food stalls operate within the tight confines of the settlement, serving as gathering points for fishermen returning from their daily catches. Fresh water and other necessities are transported via boat from the mainland, while electricity is generated through generators and solar panels. The primary reason behind the high population density on Migingo lies in its economic significance. Lake Victoria is one of the richest fishing grounds in Africa, particularly renowned for its Nile perch, a fish highly valued both locally and internationally. The lucrative nature of this trade attracts many fishermen who have transformed the rocky outcrop into a bustling hub of activity. Despite ongoing disputes between Kenya and Uganda over territorial claims, tensions occasionally flare up among the local fishermen. However, life on Migingo does not halt due to these conflicts. Each day sees dozens of boats departing from the mainland, navigating the vast expanse of Lake Victoria before returning laden with fish. These trips continue to sustain the livelihoods of hundreds of families. For many, Migingo is not a place they would choose to settle permanently, yet it offers opportunities for work and income. For numerous families, fishing in the surrounding waters is their sole means of earning a living. As long as Lake Victoria continues to provide abundant fish, Migingo will remain one of the most extraordinary inhabited places on Earth.
