Uganda marked the 50th anniversary of the Entebbe raid with the unveiling of a memorial honoring Lieutenant Colonel Yonatan "Yoni" Netanyahu, who died during the Israeli commando operation on July 4, 1976. The ceremony took place at the old terminal of Entebbe Airport, where Netanyahu was killed, and was presided over by Ugandan Chief of Defence Forces General Muhoozi Kainerugaba. The event underscored the historical ties between Uganda and Israel, despite the complex legacy of the events surrounding the raid. General Kainerugaba emphasized that the memorial served as a tribute to Netanyahu’s leadership and sacrifice during the mission, which rescued Israeli citizens held hostage after an Air France flight was hijacked by Palestinian militants. According to the Ugandan military chief, the memorial was not only dedicated to Netanyahu but also to the broader values he represented, courage, dedication to duty, and protection of human life. Kainerugaba noted that the memorial aimed to preserve the memory of the event and inspire future generations. The ceremony included remembrances of the victims of the attack, including four Israelis who were killed either during or after the operation. These individuals included Jean-Jacques Maimoni, a 19-year-old from Netanya; Dr. Pasco Cohen, a 52-year-old physician from Haifa; Ida Borochovitch, a 56-year-old from Tel Aviv; and Dora Bloch, a 74-year-old who was murdered while being held at a hospital in Kampala. In addition, Kainerugaba acknowledged the Ugandan soldiers who lost their lives during the operation, highlighting the shared sacrifices made by both nations. Kainerugaba also addressed the political context of the time, stating that the government of Idi Amin, under whom the hijackers had found refuge, did not reflect the current democratic Uganda. He stressed that modern Uganda is a constitutional democracy committed to international cooperation and partnerships, particularly with Israel. This sentiment echoed through his remarks, emphasizing that the relationship between the two countries has evolved significantly since the events of 1976. Israeli national Barak Orland, who resides in Uganda and is recognized as an informal representative of Israel, attended the ceremony. Orland spoke about the significance of the memorial, describing it as a symbol of the enduring friendship between Uganda and Israel. He highlighted how the two nations have stood together for the benefit of future generations, reinforcing the idea that their collaboration transcends past conflicts. The memorial's unveiling comes amid ongoing efforts to commemorate the legacy of Operation Entebbe, which is considered a pivotal moment in both Israeli and Ugandan histories. While the raid itself remains a subject of historical debate, the memorial serves as a physical representation of the shared experiences and evolving relationship between the two countries.
