Milton Keynes, uspješan grad u programu novih britanskih gradova, ali gdje su ljudi?

Članak govori o jedinstvenom urbanom planiranju Milton Keynesa, britanskog novog grada osnovanog 1967. godine, poznatog po svojim širokim avenijama i modernističkom dizajnu inspiriranom Le Corbusierom.

Milton Keynes, one of Britain’s most successful new towns, presents a peculiar paradox. Designed with a visionary urban plan inspired by the ideas of architect Le Corbusier, the town has been praised for its wide avenues, green spaces, and efficient infrastructure. Yet, despite these features, the question arises: where are the people? A visit to the town early on a weekday morning reveals an almost eerie emptiness, even as the population exceeds 280,000. The train station, once bustling with commuters traveling between Milton Keynes and London, was unusually crowded, so much so that movement through the platform was slow. This congestion, however, was expected, given the town's role as a commuter hub for thousands who work in the capital. The main square near the station, however, was eerily empty. As one walks toward the start of the first major avenue, Midsummer Boulevard, the landscape becomes increasingly sparse. The multi-level pedestrian crossings and traffic separation systems, which are supposed to streamline movement through the city’s core, seem more like design elements than functional solutions. The wide roads, designed to accommodate heavy traffic, were nearly devoid of vehicles, while parking areas remained untouched. Bus stops stood vacant, and buses themselves were nowhere to be seen. This pattern repeated itself throughout the day, both in the morning and late afternoon, leaving the observer puzzled. The absence of people is particularly striking in the heart of the town, where the urban planning vision is most evident. Wide boulevards, expansive green spaces, and rows of brick-built housing, many of which originated from nearby villages and hamlets, create a sense of order and purpose. Yet, the lack of human presence raises questions about how this carefully planned environment functions in daily life. The author encountered few people during their walk, encountering only two individuals along the entire route. Even in areas with commercial activity, such as the newly completed shopping centre in Bletchley, the presence of residents seems limited. Bletchley, a suburb of Milton Keynes, has long been associated with historical significance. It is home to Bletchley Park, the site of World War II codebreaking efforts that played a crucial role in Allied victory. After the war, the local council worked to expand the area, welcoming businesses and families displaced by the bombing of London. Despite this history, Bletchley’s development has followed the broader trend of Milton Keynes, aiming to become a key part of the new town’s growth. However, the recent completion of the central shopping complex has brought some signs of life, though the majority of the population appears to reside elsewhere. Academic perspectives offer further insight into the town’s unique character. Julian Williams, a professor at the University of Westminster’s School of Architecture and Cities, acknowledges that the town’s layout reflects a modernist approach, similar to the superblock concept seen in cities like Las Vegas. While the American model typically uses mile-square blocks, Milton Keynes employs a kilometre-by-kilometre grid, creating a distinct urban experience. “It’s a different scale,” he explains, noting that both models aim to integrate residential, commercial, and recreational spaces within a cohesive framework. Despite the architectural and urbanistic achievements, the challenge remains: how does this planned environment support the lives of its inhabitants? The answer lies perhaps in the very structure of the town itself, a place built for efficiency, yet seemingly designed for solitude. Whether this is intentional or a result of evolving social patterns remains unclear. What is certain is that Milton Keynes continues to stand as a remarkable example of mid-20th-century urban planning, even as it grapples with the quiet mystery of its population.

Zašto činjenice (85): The article describes the layout and design of Milton Keynes based on observations made during a visit, referencing the city's urban planning inspired by Le Corbusier. It mentions population figures, infrastructure like wide avenues and pedestrian underpasses, and provides context about the city's f

Zašto objektivnost (70): The article presents an observational account of the city's physical features and layout, but it carries a somewhat critical tone when questioning where the people are, especially given the city's size and infrastructure. This suggests a slight bias towards highlighting the contrast between the city
