Dumovec, poznati sklonište za nezbrinute životinje u Zagrebu, sada slavi svoje 25. obljetnice rada. U toku ovih dvadeset pet godina, sklonište je spasilo tisuće života, uključujući i neke neobične slučajeve. Jedan od takvih slučajeva bio je spašavanje lisca koji je upao u bazen u zagrebačkoj Dubravi. Ovaj događaj, koji je izazvao šok kod stanovnika, pokazuje koliko su važne aktivnosti Skloništa za nezbrinute životinje, i kako njihov rad doprinosi zaštiti životinja u gradu.
Rad Skloništa je započeo 2001. godine, a od tada je ogroman broj životinja pronađenih u teškim okolnostima pronađen u njihovim prostorima. Po zakonu koji dopušta eutanaziju životinja ako su bile duže vrijeme u skloništu, djelatnici Skloništa su odmah postali stranci pristupa. U skloništu su najčešće intervencije vezane za primanje pasa i mačaka, a terenska služba izlazi i zbog divljih životinja, među kojima su nalaze i neke egzotične. Prošlo je leto kada su djelatnici spašavali pitonu koji je odgmizao iz stana u Zagrebu. Kada su dobili dojavu o odbjeglom pitonu na Kajzerici, prvo su pomislili da se netko šalio, ali dojava je bila istinita. Radilo se o nečijem domu ljubimcu koji je pobjegao iz stana i više se nije znao vratiti. Iako bi mnogi pomislili da je to njihov najveći izazov, u Dumovcu se navodi da je najzahtjevša spašavanje srna i jelena.
Građani su svi odgovorni vlasnici, a to se odnosi i na dugogodišnje obrazovanje i promicanje odgovornog vlasništva.
Televizijska voditeljica Anita Martinović udomila je dvije mačke, Dalibor Petko psa, baš kao i pjevačica Indira Forza. U Dumovcu se trenutačno nalazi oko 100 pasa te 30 mačaka. Od životinja se najbrže udome štenci i mačke, a posebice žene i životinje svjetlije boje. Najteže se udomljavaju veći psi, poput onih u bika, te životinje s crnom bojom dlake. Većina udomitelja odlučuje za manje ljubimce zbog života u stanu. Najteže se udomljavaju crni psi i mačke.
