The United States and Iran have escalated their military conflict, with American forces launching attacks against Iranian targets for the eleventh consecutive night. The strikes aim to disrupt Iran’s ability to target commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil and gas supplies. For the first time since the escalation began, U.S. troops have been killed in direct combat. Meanwhile, the strait has become nearly impassable, with few ships navigating its waters due to heightened tensions and Iranian missile threats. The situation has reached a new level of intensity, with both sides engaging in nightly airstrikes. The U.S. military claims these actions are necessary to protect international shipping lanes and counter Iranian aggression. However, the effectiveness of such measures remains uncertain, as Iran continues to threaten the free flow of commerce through the region. The Strait of Hormuz is vital for approximately 20% of the world's oil supply, making its disruption a major concern for global energy markets. In response to the growing crisis, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations, comprising Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, and Kuwait, are exploring alternative routes to bypass the strait. These efforts include constructing pipelines, expanding road networks, and developing rail infrastructure. A total investment of around $250 billion is being considered to create viable alternatives that could reduce dependence on the Strait of Hormuz. Some projects are already underway, including pipeline expansions in Saudi Arabia and the development of a north-south highway in Iraq. Saudi Arabia, with its vast territory and access to both the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf, is positioning itself as a key player in this initiative. The country is investing heavily in upgrading its existing West-East Pipeline, which currently transports seven million barrels of oil per day. This project aims to increase capacity and provide an alternative route for oil exports. However, challenges remain, particularly regarding the narrowness of the Red Sea and the threat posed by Yemen-based Houthi rebels, who have announced intentions to control parts of the waterway. Iraq is also contributing to the effort, having invested $5 billion in a new port in Basra. Despite this, the port remains largely unused because it relies on the Strait of Hormuz for maritime access. The country is considering new pipeline routes through Jordan and Syria, though political instability in these regions complicates progress. Additionally, the Iraqi government has shown reluctance to fund infrastructure projects in Kurdish territories, further delaying developments. Smaller Gulf states face more complex challenges. Qatar, for instance, lacks land routes that avoid Saudi Arabia, with whom it has had tense relations in the past. Kuwait would need to rely on either Saudi Arabia or Iraq for alternative trade routes, both of which have strained diplomatic ties. The UAE, while possessing a strategic port near the eastern edge of the strait, still faces risks from Iranian drones and missiles operating within range. Long-term implications suggest that the success of these alternatives could weaken Iran’s leverage over global oil prices. While immediate changes are unlikely, the gradual expansion of these routes could diminish the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts estimate that it will take several years before these alternatives reach full operational capacity. Until then, the region remains under intense pressure, with the potential for further escalations affecting global energy security.
