Industrial project site near Monmouth Battlefield preserved in $15m deal In early August 2026, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) announced the acquisition of a 22-acre property adjacent to Monmouth Battlefield State Park for $15 million. The site, previously used as a strawberry farm, was slated for conversion into a large-scale industrial development. This decision effectively blocked the proposed warehouses and preserved the area as part of the historic battlefield park. The property in question lies along Route 33 in Manalapan, New Jersey, just steps away from the Monmouth Battlefield State Park. The park preserves the site of the June 28, 1778 Battle of Monmouth, a key engagement during the American Revolution. The 22-acre parcel had long been part of the surrounding agricultural landscape, operating as a strawberry farm for decades. However, growing development pressures in Monmouth County led to discussions about its potential repurposing. In July 2024, the Monmouth County Development Review Committee (DRC) approved plans for a large industrial project on the site. The proposal included approximately 192,560 square feet of industrial or flex space, intended for warehouse and distribution uses. The project, named Monmouth Battlefield Flex, LLC, received county-level approvals to proceed. Proponents highlighted the potential for job creation and tax revenue, while opponents raised concerns about the visual and environmental impacts on the nearby battlefield. Community resistance quickly emerged. Local residents, historical societies, and preservation groups voiced their opposition, arguing that the battlefield’s setting was integral to its historical value. They feared that the construction of large warehouses would disrupt the scenic view, increase traffic on Route 33, and compromise the park’s character. The issue gained traction amid broader conversations about balancing economic growth with the protection of historic and open spaces, particularly in anticipation of the United States' 250th anniversary in 2026. Advocacy efforts intensified, with supporters pushing state officials to take action. Preservationists urged the use of state and federal funds to acquire the land before construction could begin. Their arguments centered on the importance of maintaining the battlefield’s integrity and ensuring continued access for visitors and researchers. In response, the NJDEP stepped in. On August 4, 2026, the department announced the purchase of the property through the state’s Green Acres Program, supported by federal Land and Water Conservation Fund contributions. Acting DEP Commissioner Ed Potosnak emphasized the acquisition as both a tribute to the nation’s bicentennial and a safeguard for Revolutionary War history. The land will remain under the management of New Jersey State Parks, designated for public recreation, educational programs, and historical research. The former strawberry farm, characterized by open fields and wooded trails, will now serve as an expanded component of the Monmouth Battlefield State Park. This addition enhances the park’s offerings and reinforces its role as a vital cultural and historical resource. The acquisition marks a significant shift in the region’s approach to land use, demonstrating a prioritization of heritage over immediate economic gains. With the property secured, the focus shifts to the ongoing management and enhancement of the newly protected land. Plans for interpretive signage, guided tours, and community engagement initiatives are being considered to ensure the site remains accessible and meaningful for future generations. The outcome underscores the complex interplay between development and conservation, offering a model for similar conflicts elsewhere.
