Former deputy bureau chief of The Guardian, Anietie Akpan, has passed away. He died on Sunday night, according to the Cross River State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ). The article, released on 30 July, detailed the recent landslide in Calabar caused by heavy rains. The byline read: “By Anietie Akpan, from his sick bed with assistance by his wife, Imaobong, daughter Etinyene and neighbour Idongesit Otoobong.” This unusual signature highlighted his resolve to continue contributing to the field even while battling illness. Linus Obogo, the governor’s spokesperson for Cross River State, expressed deep respect for Mr Akpan’s legacy.
