Elizabeth Lara Rodríguez, head of the State Human Rights Defender’s Office (DDHPO) in Oaxaca, claimed that authorities did not properly address complaints filed by Francisco Alejandro Leyva Aguilar, a local journalist murdered on July 22. The allegations include failures by the federal Attorney General's Office (FGR), the state attorney general of Oaxaca, and the Federal Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists. Leyva first approached the DDHPO on July 14, 2025, to report receiving threats through social media from fake accounts and individuals. Based on his information, Lara Rodríguez named Governor Salomón Jara Cruz, Secretary of Government Jesús Romero López, and the state government’s legal advisor Geovany Vásquez Sagrero as responsible parties. A file was created to track the case, according to the office. Among the alleged oversights is a complaint Leyva submitted to the FGR, which the DDHPO requested updates on. They were told the case had been declined. Additionally, the office reportedly made five requests for protective measures for Leyva, none of which were fulfilled. The situation took another turn when the motorcycle belonging to journalist Jesús Ovando Reyes was set on fire early Friday morning outside his home in Ixtacomitán, Chiapas.
