Poland has formally requested the United States to extradite former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro, who is wanted on corruption charges. The request was submitted through diplomatic channels, according to a spokesperson for Poland’s General Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw. Ziobro, a member of the right-wing ruling party Law and Justice (PiS), fled to Hungary last year after being accused of multiple crimes, including alleged membership in a criminal organization and misappropriation of approximately 35 million euros. He had previously sought asylum in Hungary under the leadership of Prime Minister Viktor Orban. After Orban’s defeat in elections, new Hungarian leader Peter Magyar announced his country would no longer protect Ziobro. In May, Ziobro moved to the United States. Polish prosecutors allege that Ziobro faces 26 charges, which could result in up to 25 years in prison if he is convicted.
