What if all you have to do is ask for a better deal? According to consumer advocates and financial experts in New Zealand, negotiating for better terms, whether on a mortgage, salary, or household purchases, is not only possible but increasingly common. From mortgage rates to everyday purchases, individuals are being encouraged to take initiative in seeking value, a practice that many find unfamiliar yet highly beneficial. Negotiating mortgage rates has become a key area where consumers can secure better deals. Banks often engage in discussions with clients, especially when those clients signal they might switch providers. Jon Duffy, chief executive of Consumer NZ, noted that contacting one’s current mortgage broker and expressing willingness to move could lead to improved terms. “Quite often you’ll be able to get a deal that’s better than the headline advertised deal,” he said. Experts highlight that banks typically operate with two pricing tiers: the advertised or ‘carded’ rate, visible on their websites, and special rates reserved for borrowers with a loan-to-value ratio (LVR) below 80 percent. Glen McLeod, head of Link Advisory, emphasized that many borrowers are unaware of these alternative rates, making it crucial to inquire directly. He added that while banks are becoming less flexible, the effort is still worthwhile. McLeod pointed out that the focus has shifted beyond merely securing the lowest interest rate. Borrowers refinancing at the end of a fixed-term period may qualify for retention incentives, including cashback offers or direct payments. These additional benefits can significantly impact the total borrowing cost. Jeremy Andrews of Key Mortgages suggested that negotiating for cash payments is a viable strategy, noting that some banks offer up to 1 percent cashback for new or larger loans. In the workplace, nearly half of New Zealand workers have never requested a raise, despite potential opportunities. Experts recommend approaching salary negotiations with evidence of contributions and performance metrics. Understanding industry benchmarks through salary surveys from firms like Hays and Robert Walters can support a compelling case for increased compensation. Online platforms such as Seek also provide insights into comparable roles and their respective pay scales. When purchasing household items, consumers are advised to compare prices before making a decision. Taking a mobile device to shops allows real-time comparisons using tools like Google or PriceSpy. Retailers such as Briscoes and Rebel Sport offer discounts based on competitor pricing—10 percent off a lower price found elsewhere. Bunnings and Mitre 10 extend this benefit to 15 percent. Stores like JB Hi-Fi, Noel Leeming, and The Warehouse match lower prices but do not add extra discounts. Even retailers without explicit price-match policies may offer concessions upon highlighting cheaper alternatives elsewhere. Duffy noted that some stores might provide additional incentives beyond price matching, suggesting that persistence can yield unexpected benefits. This approach applies broadly, from electronics to furniture, encouraging shoppers to explore multiple avenues for savings. The shift toward negotiation reflects broader economic trends where consumers are increasingly proactive in managing costs. Whether through financial services, employment, or retail, the ability to seek better deals is framed as both a practical skill and a strategic advantage. As markets evolve, so too does the expectation that individuals should actively pursue value rather than passively accept standard terms.
