Ranger in the Allschwiler forest near Basel have raised the alarm over wildfire prevention efforts amid prolonged dry conditions. Since April, rangers have been patrolling the area to ensure visitors comply with fire restrictions and to mediate conflicts when they arise. The current drought has heightened concerns about accidental or deliberate fires, prompting increased vigilance among local authorities. The patrol operations began earlier this year as part of a broader strategy to mitigate wildfire risks during the summer months. According to Alain Chambovey, a senior ranger with the Allschwiler and Binningen ranger service, most visitors adhere to the rules, but awareness varies. He emphasized that many individuals are unaware of the strict regulations currently in place due to the elevated risk of wildfires. Chambovey noted that while the team primarily focuses on prevention rather than direct firefighting, unlike their counterparts in countries such as Spain, Portugal, and parts of Africa, their role is critical. In recent weeks, they have managed to avoid major incidents despite the high risk. One notable incident involved a portable toilet unit that caught fire, which Chambovey believes was deliberately set. Another instance saw an electric scooter left near a tree ignite, though the cause remained unclear. During one of his patrols, Chambovey encountered a situation requiring immediate action. He discovered a fire pit filled with embers and quickly contacted a nearby forester who had access to a large water container. Together, they extinguished the potential hazard before it could escalate further. Chambovey highlighted the importance of public education regarding fire safety. Recently, he intervened when someone parked a car on a field, warning them of the danger posed by the hot engine, which could spark a fire. Such interactions underscore the need for continuous awareness campaigns to prevent accidents. Beyond fire prevention, the rangers play a multifaceted role in managing visitor behavior within the forest. Chambovey often finds that children provide an opportunity for meaningful engagement. He described them as “a stroke of luck” because they serve as effective multipliers of information.
