Nađa Berbić, long-time journalist for Novi list, responded sharply to Marin Miletić, a member of the Croatian Parliament representing Most, criticizing his comments on the need for new Islamic centers in Croatia. In an open letter addressed to everyone except Miletić himself, Berbić expressed her disdain for what she described as Miletić's capacity for hatred and impatience, stating, "I am ashamed of your capacity for hatred and impatience." She emphasized that no one would harm anyone else and that she and others have no interest in taking even a square millimeter of someone’s hatred, which she claimed would poison them. Berbić's response came after Miletić posted a video questioning the necessity of building new Islamic centers in Croatia. He argued that existing spaces were sufficient for the country's 50,000 Muslim citizens and suggested a reciprocal approach, implying that for each Islamic center built in Croatia, a Catholic church should be constructed in countries such as Saudi Arabia or Qatar. In her letter, Berbić reflected on her family history, the role of the Islamic community in Rijeka, and the values instilled in her during childhood. She recounted how her parents, Fadila and Muhamed Tokalić, had helped many people throughout their lives, including refugees from Slavonia and Bosnia during the war. Her father, she wrote, volunteered to supply bread to Rijeka through a monthly shipment during the conflict. She detailed how her family home in Zamet took in dozens of refugees over months and years, while her family squeezed into her parents' apartment. She noted how warmly people were received at her mother’s house, despite its modest conditions, and how the hospitality extended to all who needed it. Berbić also spoke about the role of the Islamic community in Rijeka, noting that her father was one of three founders of the local Islamic community and among fewer than twenty founders of the Islamic community in Croatia. She highlighted the community's efforts to build a mosque and the contributions made by generations of members. Her letter touched upon the broader historical context of the Islamic community in Croatia, referencing the use of mosques as shelters for refugees during the Yugoslav wars, including when military barracks in Slovenia opened their doors to young soldiers who could not be transported back home due to overcrowding. Berbić concluded with a personal reflection on her identity, emphasizing that she has never faced discrimination for practicing Islam, fasting during Ramadan, attending prayers, or making baklava for Bajram. She acknowledged her imperfections but stressed the lessons learned from her teachers and especially her parents, whose generosity and kindness left a lasting impact on her life.
