A video captured by a security camera has exposed a serious traffic incident involving a political leader from the Arhuaco indigenous community in the Magdalena region, resulting in three injured individuals. The footage shows a truck entering the wrong lane, colliding violently with a motorcycle carrying three members of a family, including a seven-year-old child. After the collision, the driver fails to stop and continues driving away, prompting local residents to pursue him on motorcycles until they block his escape. The incident occurred during the night of the previous Monday, which was a public holiday, along the Troncal del Oriente highway near the settlement of La Gran Vía, under the jurisdiction of the Zona Bananera area. According to authorities, the driver, Crispín Mejía Izquierdo, is a recognized political leader within the Arhuaco community and currently serves as an active official in the Magdalena Governor’s office. Initial reports suggested he fled the scene, sparking outrage among witnesses. However, this concern escalated after the confirmation from the Zona Bananera Traffic Department that Mejía had been fined for driving under the influence of alcohol, a violation classified as type F under Colombia's National Traffic Code. The fine imposed on Mejía amounts to approximately 60.778 million Colombian pesos, alongside administrative consequences outlined in national legislation. The documentation related to the case indicates that the fine was issued on July 14 and remained pending at the time of inquiry. A close relative of one of the victims stated that the file contains multiple pieces of evidence supporting the investigation, including videos allegedly showing Mejía operating the truck at the time of the crash, official documents indicating his attempt to flee the site and being intercepted by community members, and technical reports detailing the accident. The truck involved in the incident has outstanding fines exceeding 18 million pesos. The collision launched the occupants several meters onto the road surface. Witnesses were particularly disturbed by the driver's failure to assist the injured before leaving the scene. Community members pursued the vehicle on motorcycles until they managed to halt its progress, preventing the driver from escaping before law enforcement arrived. The case is progressing through multiple channels. In addition to ongoing criminal and administrative investigations, the Magdalena Governor’s office has initiated an internal process to determine the responsibilities of the official. The situation has raised concerns about accountability and the behavior of public officials, especially given the severity of the incident and the alleged involvement of alcohol. Authorities continue to review all available evidence to ensure a thorough understanding of the circumstances surrounding the accident.
