The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has documented widespread violations by Israeli forces against international humanitarian law in Lebanon, some of which could constitute war crimes, according to UN High Commissioner Volker Türk during a statement in Beirut. The allegations include continued Israeli air strikes, artillery bombardments, and the use of explosive weapons in densely populated areas, resulting in high civilian casualties, extensive destruction, and mass displacement. Meanwhile, rocket attacks by the Iranian-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah on inhabited areas in Israel have also killed civilians and damaged civil infrastructure, Türk added. The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah escalated after the group launched rockets into northern Israel on March 2, prompting a military response from Israel. According to Lebanese authorities, over 4,300 people have been killed and approximately 12,200 injured in Lebanon since then. Despite a ceasefire agreement, Israel continues its aerial and ground operations, with villages south of the Litani River reportedly destroyed or rendered uninhabitable. The river lies roughly 30 kilometers from the border with Israel. Türk emphasized that the situation remains dire, with ongoing hostilities causing severe humanitarian consequences. He noted that the use of explosive weapons in urban settings has led to disproportionate harm to civilians, violating principles of distinction and proportionality under international humanitarian law. The UN has called for immediate cessation of hostilities and protection of civilian populations, urging both sides to adhere to their obligations under the Geneva Conventions. The Israeli military has maintained that its actions are aimed at neutralizing threats posed by Hezbollah, particularly following the group’s cross-border attacks. Israeli officials have stated that they are targeting militant positions while minimizing harm to non-combatants. However, independent reports from local and international observers suggest that civilian casualties remain alarmingly high, with many families displaced and entire communities left in ruins. In contrast, Hezbollah has accused Israel of conducting indiscriminate attacks, citing numerous instances of civilian casualties and damage to residential areas. The group has claimed that its rocket fire was a defensive measure in response to Israeli aggression, emphasizing that it does not target civilians. Both parties have denied responsibility for specific incidents, though evidence gathered by the UN suggests that multiple violations have occurred on both sides. Human rights organizations and aid groups operating in the region have expressed deep concern over the escalating violence and its impact on vulnerable populations. They warn that prolonged exposure to such conditions can lead to long-term psychological trauma, food insecurity, and disrupted access to medical care. International calls for de-escalation have grown louder, with several countries expressing solidarity with Lebanon and urging an end to hostilities. As the situation continues to unfold, the focus remains on verifying the extent of alleged violations and ensuring accountability. The UN has requested access to affected areas to conduct further investigations, though logistical challenges and security concerns have hindered these efforts. With the conflict showing no signs of abating, the international community is under increasing pressure to take decisive action to protect civilians and uphold international humanitarian standards.
