A high-ranking member of the Škaljar clan was killed near Nikšić on Saturday, according to local media reports. The victim, Jovan Mrvaljević, was identified as part of an organized criminal group. Police confirmed that the incident occurred in the village of Kapino Polje, close to Nikšić, during a shooting. An investigation into the perpetrators is ongoing. Mrvaljević was reportedly a key figure within the Škaljar clan, known for its involvement in organized crime activities in the region. In early 2021, he was suspected of being part of a group that allegedly attempted to eliminate two prominent criminals in Belgrade, Veljko Belivuk, known by his nickname “Velja Nevolja,” and Marko Miljković in Titograd. These alleged plans were part of broader efforts to destabilize rival criminal networks in the area. In addition to these accusations, Mrvaljević claimed that he and his associate, Mila Jovanović, had been subjected to abuse by officials from the former Special Operations Support Unit of the police department, including Petar Lazović and Jugoslav Raičević. According to Mrvaljević’s account, the abuse took place during their transport to Podgorica on the night of December 31, 2020. He described how they were detained in a police vehicle, forced to wear sacks over their heads, physically assaulted, and threatened with sexual violence. However, both officers were initially cleared of the allegations. A judge from the Basic Court in Podgorica, Ilija Radulić, ruled that there was insufficient evidence to support the claims. The court cited the lack of physical evidence, noting that two crucial pieces of evidence, video recordings from police premises and the Security Center in Nikšić, did not show signs of injury. This decision has sparked controversy among those who believe the victims were wrongfully treated. The case highlights the complex relationship between law enforcement and criminal organizations in the region. While the police have denied wrongdoing, the allegations against them suggest deeper tensions that could affect public trust in the justice system. The killing of Mrvaljević adds another layer of complexity to an already volatile situation, raising questions about whether the incident was linked to the earlier accusations or if it represents a separate act of violence. Local authorities have not yet released further details regarding the circumstances of Mrvaljević's death. However, the timing of the killing, just months after the initial legal proceedings, has led some observers to speculate about potential connections. Whether the murder was retaliation for past actions or unrelated to the previous allegations remains unclear. As the investigation continues, the focus will likely shift toward identifying the individuals responsible for the shooting. Authorities are expected to intensify their search, particularly given the high-profile nature of the victim and the ongoing scrutiny surrounding the earlier allegations. The outcome of this inquiry could have significant implications for both the criminal underworld and the functioning of local law enforcement.
