Le KB Dubrava a réalisé la première opération laparoscopique ALIF en Croatie

The Clinical Hospital Dubrava has performed the first laparoscopic Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF) operation in Croatia. The procedure was carried out on Thursday and marks a significant advancement in spinal surgery within the country. According to information released by the hospital, this type of operation is still relatively rare globally and is conducted only in a limited number of highly specialized centers. The operation addresses conditions affecting the lower part of the spine, including degenerative diseases of the intervertebral discs, spinal instability, spondylolisthesis (displacement of vertebrae), and spinal deformities. The ALIF procedure involves accessing the spine from the front side of the body through the abdomen. During the operation, the damaged disc is removed and replaced with an implant designed to restore spinal stability and promote fusion of the vertebrae. This minimally invasive approach allows surgeons to access the targeted structures directly through small incisions on the abdominal wall, minimizing damage to surrounding tissues. As a result, patients experience faster recovery times and significantly reduced levels of pain compared to traditional open surgeries. The operation at Clinical Hospital Dubrava was conducted in collaboration between the Department of Surgery, led by Doc. Dr. Sc. Mislav Rakić, and the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, under the leadership of Doc. Dr. Sc. Vedran Bilić. Such hybrid surgical procedures can only be performed in highly specialized clinical centers due to their complexity and the high level of expertise required. Although ALIF has been used for many years, the laparoscopic version is still in its early stages of development and is gradually being adopted by leading global medical centers. This makes the achievement at Clinical Hospital Dubrava a notable milestone for Croatian medicine. Clinical Hospital Dubrava has been continuously introducing new minimally invasive and robot-assisted neurosurgical procedures over recent years, developing advanced spinal surgery techniques. Representatives from the hospital stated that Croatian patients are now gaining access to methods previously available only in a few specialized centers worldwide. They emphasized that this technological and professional breakthrough confirms the development of top-tier medicine at Clinical Hospital Dubrava. The hospital's efforts align with broader trends in modern healthcare focusing on reducing patient trauma and accelerating recovery processes.
