Türkiye has concluded the bidding phase for the reconstruction of the historic Ani Bridge situated on the frontier with Armenia, according to Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu. The minister disclosed this progress on October 25, marking a tangible step forward in bilateral cooperation. The structure, estimated to originate in the tenth century, currently exists only as a series of remaining piers. Its restoration serves as a prominent emblem of the ongoing efforts to normalize relations between Ankara and Yerevan, two nations that lack formal diplomatic ties and have maintained a closed land border for decades. A foundational agreement governing this initiative was executed in Yerevan on May 4. This protocol defines the specific scope and methodologies required for the rebuilding effort. Under these terms, the physical restoration will be overseen by a joint commission comprising Türkiye’s Transport and Infrastructure Ministry and the General Directorate of Highways, known locally as KGM. The directorate initiated the competitive tender process on September 16. The procedure reached its final stage when the official contract was signed on September 28, thereby completing the administrative prerequisites for construction. Uraloğlu described the original engineering specifications of the bridge, which measured 80 meters in length and eight meters in width. It was erected at the narrowest section of the Arpaçay River, where the waterway constricts to just 36 meters. The bridge featured a circular arch spanning 31 meters. Historical records indicate that this arch collapsed on October 16, 1807. During its operational period, the structure functioned as a critical transit point along the Silk Road and operated as a customs checkpoint facilitating commerce between Eastern and Western regions. The broader Ani archaeological site, which encompasses the bridge ruins, received inscription on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage List in 2016. At that time, the designation included twenty-one distinct cultural assets. Uraloğlu stated that the primary objective of the current project is to safeguard this significant piece of cultural heritage for subsequent generations. He highlighted the bridge’s location within Ani, a major medieval trading hub, emphasizing its enduring importance to regional history. Diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Armenia have been absent since 1991. Their shared terrestrial boundary has remained shut since 1993, a situation exacerbated by tensions stemming from the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and divergent views on the events of 1915. Momentum for rapprochement accelerated in late 2021 following the designation of special envoys by both governments. Since that period, the two states have implemented various confidence-building measures. These include the initiation of direct freight air services and negotiations regarding the potential opening of the land border to diplomats and citizens of third countries. Additional collaborative infrastructure projects, such as the Gyumri-Kars railway link, have also advanced during this timeframe. The minister noted that the recent contractual milestones align with the directives established during the May meeting in Yerevan. That session was attended by Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz. The involvement of high-level officials underscores the political weight assigned to the bridge’s recovery. The General Directorate of Highways retains responsibility for the execution of the works, operating under the oversight of the aforementioned joint body. The completion of the tender process signifies that the project has moved beyond theoretical planning into the preparatory stages of actual construction. The restoration aims to revive a landmark that once connected disparate economic zones. By addressing the structural remnants left after the 1807 collapse, the project seeks to restore a functional element of the ancient trade network. The collaboration between the two ministries ensures that technical standards are met while adhering to the diplomatic framework agreed upon in spring. As the contract stands signed, attention now turns to the logistical aspects of rebuilding the arch and deck components at the river crossing.
