Turkey detains dozens, including journalists, in new wave of raids ahead of NATO summit

Turkish police conducted a series of coordinated raids across multiple provinces on June 23 and July 3, 2026, detaining dozens of individuals ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara. Among those arrested were journalists associated with Bianet, T24, and OdaTV, as well as academics, lawyers, law students, political party representatives, trade unionists, and members of leftist organizations such as the Progressive Lawyers Association (ÇHD), the Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP), the Kaldıraç Movement, and others. Raids targeted locations in İstanbul, Ankara, İzmir, Kocaeli, Antalya, Dersim, Urfa, Çanakkale, Bursa, and others, with some operations involving the detention of over 200 people in Ankara alone. The detentions included members of socialist groups, labor unions, and cultural associations, with some arrests linked to pre-summit activities. The Progressive Lawyers Association criticized the actions as politically motivated.
