Marlen Reusser of Switzerland has taken the lead in the Tour de France Femmes after securing victory in the opening time trial and donning the yellow jersey. The race began in her home country with the first stage in Lausanne, which coincided with Switzerland's national holiday, known as Bundesfeier. Although Reusser finished tenth in the uphill sprint among a group of ten top contenders during that stage, she had already planned for this moment. Her strategy centered around the fourth stage, a hilly time trial to Dijon, France, a key opportunity for her to assert dominance. Reusser and her trainer and partner, Hendrik Werner, referred to their preparation for the Dijon time trial as “Project Dijon,” drawing on the association between mustard, the color of the town’s famous condiment, and the yellow jersey of the Tour. This plan was set in motion even before Christmas, and it paid off. Reusser expressed satisfaction with how everything unfolded, stating that she and her team had aimed to win the yellow jersey from the outset and succeeded in doing so. Despite her success, Reusser admitted to some challenges during the time trial. She noted issues with her bike and wind conditions, which were different from what she had anticipated during reconnaissance. However, these obstacles did not prevent her from finishing just four seconds ahead of the unexpectedly strong Dutch rider Lieke Nooijen. This narrow margin secured her the yellow jersey and marked a personal milestone, as it was the first time she had worn the prestigious garment in her career. Reusser, who turned 25 earlier this year, made the decision to abandon her medical career to pursue professional cycling. After leaving her position as an assistant doctor, she returned to live with her parents. At the time, the salary disparity between being a physician and a professional cyclist was significant. Currently, minimum salaries in the Women's WorldTour range from €38,000 for riders under social insurance contracts to €62,000 for self-employed athletes. As captain of the Spanish team Movistar, Reusser earns a six-figure salary, though below €1 million. According to Swiss media reports, this income allows her to afford a new home in Andorra, a mountainous paradise ideal for climbing, and also supports the renovation of her family’s farmhouse, intended as a future retirement residence. The threshold of one million euros, long considered unattainable in women’s cycling, was crossed first by Demi Vollering, Reusser’s former teammate and current rival from the Netherlands. After switching teams last year from SD Worx to FDJ-Suez, Vollering became the first millionaire in the women’s peloton. Both Reusser and Vollering have used their time-trialing prowess to pull away from the competition in the overall standings. Vollering trails Reusser by 17 seconds, while defending champion Pauline Ferrand-Prevot has lost over two minutes. Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney, captain of the German team Canyon/SRAM, took nearly a minute and eight seconds longer than Reusser. For the German participants, the day was not favorable. Antonia Niedermaier, a promising climber with ambitions for the general classification, struggled particularly with pedaling rhythm in tailwinds and downhill sections, losing more than one minute. Other German riders faced similar difficulties, highlighting the challenges posed by the demanding course and weather conditions. Reusser’s performance underscores the growing competitiveness within the women’s peloton, with athletes increasingly able to secure substantial earnings through high-profile races such as the Tour de France Femmes. As the race progresses, attention will shift to how well the leading riders can maintain their positions in subsequent stages, especially given the challenging terrain and unpredictable weather conditions that often characterize the later parts of the tour.
