The program includes plans for expanding scientific assessments to determine the current population size of the species in the region. So far, researchers have identified 21 individual clouded leopards in Balpakram National Park, and further surveys are planned for other key habitats. The mainland clouded leopard is classified as "vulnerable" by the IUCN Red List, highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts. Unlike its island counterpart, the Sunda clouded leopard, the mainland species is more widely distributed across Asia, with significant populations in Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand, and parts of northeast India. Conservation experts warn that the survival of the clouded leopard depends on preserving vast, contiguous forest areas.
