The Democrats Party has officially announced its Knesset slate ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for October 27. The list includes 51 candidates, with Naama Lazimi securing the second position following Yair Golan, the party’s leader. The announcement comes after the completion of the party’s internal primaries, which took place on July 20, 2026, and saw over 112,000 registered members participate in virtual voting. The Democrats, formed in 2024 through the merger of the Labor and Meretz parties, are part of the opposition bloc aiming to replace Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The party’s decision to conduct its primaries digitally marks a first for the organization, with voters casting ballots via mobile devices and computers using a secure digital platform. The process allowed for broader participation, with more than 114,000 members joining the party in recent months, representing an unprecedented growth since the 1990s. The final Knesset slate was unveiled during the party’s election campaign launch in Tel Aviv. It incorporates a “zipper system” to ensure gender parity, alternating between female and male candidates. Additionally, the list guarantees representation for Meretz members, individuals from rural areas, and minority communities. The party emphasized that the slate reflects a diverse cross-section of Israeli society, including 19 women, four Arab candidates, three Druze candidates, and two members of the LGBTQ+ community. Among the notable candidates are Yaya Fink, a social and political activist; former Meretz MK Michal Rozin; Rabbi Avi Dabush, executive director of Rabbis for Human Rights; and Omri Ronen, a social activist and reservist. The list also includes 17 leaders involved in protest movements and public activism, 12 former IDF officers, 11 candidates with backgrounds in the civil service, and eight former Knesset members. Current Members of Knesset Naama Lazimi, Efrat Rayten, and Gilad Kariv are also included in the slate. Yair Golan, the party’s leader, expressed optimism about the results, stating that the primaries represented “a celebration of Israel's democracy.” He called on citizens to participate in the electoral process, emphasizing that a strong Democrats presence in the Knesset and future government could help restore security, democracy, and hope to the nation. Golan reiterated the importance of unity within the party, noting that only a cohesive team could effectively challenge the ruling coalition. The Democrats’ focus on inclusivity and diversity aligns with its historical roots as a left-leaning party advocating for social justice and equality. The merger of Labor and Meretz in 2024 aimed to create a unified front against the policies of the right-wing government, particularly regarding issues such as the occupation of Palestinian territories, religious pluralism, and economic inequality. The party has consistently positioned itself as a progressive alternative to the status quo, appealing to younger voters and urban populations. While the Democrats’ internal dynamics remain largely positive, external challenges persist. Recent reports suggest growing tensions within the American Democratic Party regarding Israel’s role in global affairs. Former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel warned during a visit to Tel Aviv that Israel faces increasing scrutiny from both domestic and international audiences. His comments highlighted concerns about the erosion of Israel’s international standing and the impact of internal divisions on foreign policy.
