Batam, Indonesia, On 20 July 2026, the Nongsa Changi Cable (NCC), a new submarine cable system, successfully landed at Nongsa Digital Park (NDP) in Batam, marking a major step forward in Indonesia’s efforts to bolster its digital infrastructure. The event was attended by prominent officials including Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto and Deputy Prime Minister & Minister for Trade and Industry of Singapore Gan Kim Yong. The collaboration among TelkomGroup, Nongsa Digital Park, and BW Digital aims to enhance Batam’s role as a key digital gateway linking Indonesia and Singapore to global markets. The NCC cable connects Batam and Singapore via the shortest route across the Singapore Strait, offering high-capacity, low-latency connectivity. It spans approximately 50 kilometers and features 24 fiber pairs, designed to meet the increasing demand for cloud services, hyperscale platforms, artificial intelligence (AI), and data center interconnection in the region. This new cable joins the Indonesia Singapore Cable System (INSICA), another initiative by Telkom Group, forming part of the broader Indonesia Cable Express (ICE) ecosystem. Together, these cables aim to strengthen digital connectivity between Indonesia and Singapore, reinforcing their positions within the global digital landscape. The cable landing ceremony highlighted the significance of the NCC in supporting Indonesia’s digital transformation. Airlangga Hartarto emphasized that robust physical infrastructure and strong connectivity are essential for the country’s digital evolution. He noted that the NCC contributes to the creation of a new digital corridor between Indonesia and Singapore, which will help solidify their strategic roles in the global digital ecosystem. Additionally, he pointed out that the project is expected to foster greater investment, innovation, and technology-driven economic activity. Setyanto Hantoro, Managing Director Business-2 of Danantara Indonesia, underscored the importance of strategic investments like the NCC in promoting digital sovereignty and infrastructure. He explained that such projects act as a catalyst for innovation, competitiveness, and industry growth. According to him, the NCC is anticipated to have a broad economic impact by stimulating the development of industries in Batam and throughout Indonesia, thereby contributing to national economic growth and resilience. Beyond improving regional connectivity, the NCC is projected to play a pivotal role in accelerating Indonesia’s digital economy. By attracting investment in digital infrastructure, the project supports the expansion of AI-ready data centers and enables enterprises to undergo digital transformation.
